The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued a public health notice regarding a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in Central Harlem (ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039).
The risk to most people remains low, but it is important to be aware of the symptoms and take prompt action if needed.
Key Information:
Symptoms: Flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. Some may also experience headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, confusion, or diarrhea.
What to Do: If you live or work in the affected ZIP codes and develop symptoms, see a health care provider immediately.
Not Contagious: Legionnaires’ disease is not spread person-to-person. It is caused by inhaling water v***r containing the Legionella bacteria.
Water and Air Safety: It is safe to drink water, bathe, shower, cook, and use air conditioners. The issue is linked to cooling towers, which the NYC Health Department is actively testing.
