The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center mourns the loss of Lloyd Williams, a towering figure in Harlem and a tireless advocate for the vitality, culture, and economic growth of our community.

As President and CEO of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and Co-Founder of HARLEM WEEK, Lloyd devoted his life to celebrating Harlem’s rich legacy while creating opportunities that have shaped its future. His vision, leadership, and steadfast commitment to uplifting our neighborhood leave an indelible mark on generations of residents, businesses, and community institutions—including our own.

Mr. Williams wasn’t very interested in accepting individual praise for his work; instead, he always passed the credit on to his beloved organization. Such was the case in 2023, when the Bowen Center sought to present him with the Emma L. Bowen Community Service Award. Rather than accept it personally, he requested that the honor be presented to The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce. We were happy to oblige—a testament to his humility and unwavering commitment to collective achievement over individual recognition.

That we find ourselves mourning Lloyd’s passing in the midst of celebrating HARLEM WEEK—a signature event he nurtured into an international celebration of Harlem’s culture and pride—makes his absence even more profound.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and the thousands of individuals and families we serve, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Lloyd’s family, his colleagues at The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, and all who were fortunate to call him a friend.

Lloyd Williams’s passing is a profound loss for Harlem, but his legacy of service, leadership, and love for this community will continue to inspire us all.

Today, we honor Juneteenth—Freedom Day.

On this day in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free.

Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how far we must still go to advance justice, equity, and healing. At the Bowen Center, we are proud to stand with our community in celebrating Black liberation, culture, and resilience. 🖤❤️💚

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Congressman Charles B. Rangel — a giant of American politics, a proud son of Harlem, and a fearless advocate for justice, equity, and opportunity.

Congressman Rangel was more than a legendary legislator — he was a moral compass, a tireless champion for the underrepresented, and a living symbol of what public service at its best can be.

From the battlefields of Korea to the halls of Congress, he brought courage, conviction, and compassion to everything he did.

As a founding member of Harlem’s storied “Gang of Four” — alongside Percy Sutton, Basil Paterson, and David Dinkins — Congressman Rangel helped shape a political dynasty that transformed New York and inspired generations of Black leadership nationwide. Together, these trailblazers broke barriers, expanded civil rights, and built a legacy of empowerment rooted in community and service.

Congressman Rangel also shared a deep and enduring partnership with our namesake, Emma L. Bowen — working alongside her on some of Harlem’s most pressing social issues, from education and economic development to equity in housing, health care and media representation. Their bond was grounded in a shared belief: that Harlem’s families deserved not only a voice in the room, but a future built on dignity, opportunity, and care.

At the Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center, we were honored to recognize Congressman Rangel’s remarkable legacy with our highest honor — the Emma L. Bowen Humanitarian Award. He understood that access to mental health care, addiction treatment, and social services is not a luxury but a fundamental right — and he never stopped fighting to ensure Harlem had the resources it needed to thrive.

On behalf of our entire Board of Directors, staff, and the thousands of families we serve each year, we extend our deepest condolences to the Rangel family and to all who loved and admired this extraordinary man. His voice may be gone, but his legacy — and his unwavering belief in the promise of Harlem — will live on in the work we do every day.

Rest in power, Congressman.

We’re thrilled to announce the official launch of Bowen’s Freeze for Mental Health — our bold, community-driven challenge to raise awareness and support for mental health and addiction treatment services right here in Harlem!

Inspired by the original Ice Bucket Challenge, Bowen’s Freeze for Mental Health invites you to make a splash for a cause that truly matters — and we’re proud to be led by our campaign ambassador, Larry Scott Blackmon.

Our campaign goal is : 200 participants taking an ice bath for mental health by May 31, 2025!
