Supporting families through pregnancy and postpartum requires more than clinical care. It requires deep compassion, advocacy, and an understanding of the complex emotional and practical challenges families face.

Social workers are often the people helping parents navigate those moments: connecting them to resources, holding space for difficult conversations, and ensuring families feel supported during vulnerable transitions.

As Social Work Month winds down, we want to acknowledge our deep gratitude for the social workers whose dedication helps strengthen maternal mental health care and ensures families never have to navigate these challenges alone. đź’›

In just a few words, Jessie Buckley captured something so many mothers feel: the love, the intensity, the vulnerability, and the emotional complexity that come with caring for a child.

Motherhood can hold joy, overwhelm, pride, exhaustion, and deep love—all at the same time. That “beautiful chaos” is real, and it deserves to be acknowledged.

Moments like this matter, especially when they’re shared on major stages like the Oscars. The more we talk openly about the realities of motherhood, the more we help create a culture where mothers feel seen, supported, and understood. 💛

Many parents expect postpartum depression to appear in the early weeks after birth. But maternal mental health doesn’t always follow a predictable timeline.

As routines change, support shifts, and the realities of parenting settle in, emotional challenges can emerge months later — something many parents aren’t prepared for or screened for.

In a recent article with , our CEO, Medical Director, and reproductive psychiatrist Catherine Birndorf, MD, shares why postpartum depression and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders can show up well beyond the newborn stage, and why recognizing the signs matters.

Understanding that these experiences are common, valid, and treatable can make all the difference for parents who may be struggling quietly.

Things many new parents aren’t told about sleep:

đź’¤ Babies waking frequently is normal.
đź’¤ Sleep deprivation can deeply affect mental health.
đź’¤ And parents deserve support with sleep too.

In the early months of parenting, sleep is often fragmented, unpredictable, and exhausting. But when sleep struggles start to affect your mood, anxiety, or overall wellbeing, it may be time to ask for support.

On World Sleep Day, we’re reminding parents that sleep challenges are common and you don’t have to navigate them alone.

If you or someone you love is struggling, give us a call at (212) 335-0034 to speak with a Care Coordinator and learn more about the support available.

So many mothers come into our offices asking themselves a painful question:

“Why can’t I handle this?”

But often the real question is much bigger.

Motherhood in the U.S. exists within systems that make the transition into parenting extraordinarily difficult. Limited leave, costly childcare, unrealistic expectations, and healthcare systems that don’t always center mothers’ experiences.

When those pressures pile up, maternal mental health can suffer.

Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are influenced by biology, yes, but they’re also shaped by the social conditions mothers are living in.

Understanding that context can shift the narrative from self-blame to support.

Because struggling during pregnancy or postpartum isn’t a sign that you’re failing. It’s a signal that mothers deserve more care, more support, and stronger systems around them.

Maternal mental health affects 1 in 5 mothers, yet access to care and support is still far from guaranteed.

Today is the National Day of Action for Maternal Mental Health, a nationwide effort to advocate for stronger federal support for programs that help mothers and families every day.

Two critical programs are at stake:

📞 The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline (1-833-TLC-MAMA)
👩‍⚕️ The Maternal Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Program

Advocacy takes just minutes, but the impact can be life-saving.

When we speak up, we help ensure that mothers across the country have access to the care, resources, and support they deserve.

Share this post to help raise awareness and support maternal mental health. Most importantly, go to Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance to use their online advocacy tool to ask your federal elected officials to increase funding for maternal health programs.

Today we’re celebrating the women who make our work possible, and the women we are honored to support every day.

At The Motherhood Center, our team is made up of incredible staff who show up every day to support mothers through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

And we are equally inspired by the mothers in our community — women navigating pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood with courage, honesty, and resilience.

International Women’s Day is a reminder that supporting women means supporting mothers, their mental health, their wellbeing, and the systems that allow them to thrive.

Today we celebrate the women who care, the women who lead, and the women who reach out for support.

We see you. We support you. We celebrate you.

It’s rare to hear pregnancy talked about this honestly, let alone about a fantasy character on a major platform.

In this clip from , Sarah J. Maas describes something many people experience but don’t always feel comfortable saying out loud: pregnancy can be joyful and frightening, overwhelming, and even traumatic.

And when those experiences aren’t talked about openly, parents can start to believe something is wrong with them for feeling that way.

The reality is that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are major physical and emotional transitions. Fear, loss of control, medical complications, and constant worry about your baby’s wellbeing can all take a toll on mental health. These experiences can contribute to Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), which affect 1 in 5 mothers.

That’s why it matters when public conversations make space for the full range of pregnancy experiences — not just the picture-perfect ones.

If pregnancy or postpartum hasn’t felt the way you expected, you’re not alone. And you deserve support.

📞 Call The Motherhood Center at (212) 335-0034 to speak with a Care Coordinator and learn more about how we support maternal mental health.
