The invisible load of new motherhood isn’t just the diapers, the feedings, or the lack of sleep.

For mothers experiencing a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder (PMAD), the weight is often internal.

Racing thoughts.
Constant self-doubt.
Fear that something is wrong.
Guilt for not feeling the “right” way.
Exhaustion that rest doesn’t fix.

From the outside, it can look like everything is fine.
On the inside, it can feel overwhelming.

PMADs are common. They are treatable. And they are not a reflection of your strength, your love, or your ability as a parent.

If this feels familiar, you are not alone. You deserve support that can meet you where you are. If you or someone you love is struggling, call us at 212-335-0034 to speak with a care coordinator to learn how we may be able to help. 💛

New research conducted by University of Texas at Austin sociologist Shannon Cavanagh, PhD, and highlighted by WebMD, underscores a critical maternal mental health concern in the United States. Mothers are recovering more slowly from postpartum depression than mothers in other countries, with symptoms sometimes lasting years.

This challenges the idea that postpartum depression is confined to the “fourth trimester” or even the first year. For some parents, symptoms can begin later and last longer than we expect.

Limited leave.
Economic pressure.
Isolation.
Unrealistic expectations.

The takeaway isn’t that recovery is impossible. It’s that recovery doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Postpartum depression is common. It is treatable. And early, specialized care matters. Maternal mental health isn’t just a “mom issue.” It’s a public health issue.

When mothers don’t receive adequate care, the impact extends to families, children, and communities. We can, and must, do better.

If you or someone you love is struggling during pregnancy or postpartum, we’re here to help. We specialize in this type of care for a reason.

Our Birth Trauma Support Group meets TODAY and every Monday.

If parts of your birth story still feel heavy, you’re not alone.

Maybe your baby is healthy, and you’re grateful. But that doesn’t erase what you went through to get there.

An unexpected C-section.
Medical complications.
A birth that didn’t go the way you carefully planned.
Moments that felt frightening, overwhelming, or out of control.

Birth trauma can happen to anyone, and it happens more often than people talk about.

Too often, parents are told to just feel “lucky” and move on. But you’re allowed to hold both gratitude and grief. You’re allowed to need space to process what happened.

Our clinician-led Birth Trauma Support Group in partnership with provides a safe place to talk through your experience, connect with others who understand, and begin to heal.

Sometimes healing begins with simply being able to say, “That was hard.”

Join us today, or any Monday. Register at the link in our bio. 💛

Becoming a mother changes everything.

Your brain.
Your body.
Your identity.
Your relationships.
Your priorities.

There’s a word for that: matrescence.

Coined over 50 years ago by anthropologist Dana Raphael, matrescence describes the profound physical, psychological, social, and emotional transition into motherhood. And yet, it’s still missing from most major dictionaries.

When we saw a campaign like this advocating to make matrescence mainstream, we couldn’t help but spread the word.

Because naming this transition matters.

When mothers understand that what they’re experiencing is a developmental shift, not a personal failure, it changes everything.

At The Motherhood Center, we see matrescence every day. We support families through it every day. And we believe it deserves language, recognition, and care.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

Some journeys to motherhood are longer than we ever imagined. And sometimes, they’re carried quietly.

Thank you for being vulnerable and opening up about trying to conceive for two years while showing up to work every day. Going to early morning appointments, then heading to work, all while holding hope (and heartbreak) privately.

“I was doing it all silently… just trying to be my healthiest version of myself to have a baby.”

This is something so many parents quietly navigate. Often keeping it to themselves, and certainly not wanting to allow themselves to feel excitement if things start to work out. Navigating fertility challenges, loss, and uncertainty behind the scenes, all while smiling on the outside is so difficult, yet so many do it.

If you’re in the thick of it:
🤍 You’re not weak for struggling.
🤍 You’re not “behind.”
🤍 You don’t have to do it alone.

Thank you and for creating space for honest conversations about the realities of the road to motherhood, and continuing to share conversations like this.

If you’re navigating fertility challenges, loss, or the emotional toll of trying to conceive, support matters. Call us at 212-335-0034 to learn how we can help. 💛

You may have hear of Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG), but what’s important to understand is that it’s not “just morning sickness.”

It’s a serious medical condition and its impact doesn’t stop at the physical symptoms.

Emerging research shows that people with HG face significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. When someone is physically unwell for weeks or months — often dehydrated, malnourished, isolated, and dismissed — their mental health is affected too.

Pregnancy complications impact the whole person.

That’s why we must:
✨ Screen for anxiety, depression, and trauma
✨ Validate lived experiences and reduce stigma
✨ Integrate mental health into obstetric care
✨ Advocate for workplace and family accommodations

Compassionate, comprehensive care matters.

If you or someone you love is struggling with HG, you are not alone. Support is available.

Grief after miscarriage or recurrent pregnancy loss doesn’t look just one way.

For some, it’s deep sadness.
For others, it can be anger. Jealousy. Numbness.
Sometimes it shows up as conflict with a partner who’s grieving differently.
Or as intense productivity and distraction.
Or as guilt. Confusion. Anxiety about future pregnancies.

You might find yourself struggling to hold space for someone else’s joy while carrying your own heartbreak.
You might feel stung by comments like, “At least you can get pregnant.”
You might feel worried about what comes next.

All of it is valid.

There is no “right” way to grieve a pregnancy loss. There is only your way. 🤍

If you’re navigating miscarriage or recurrent loss and feeling overwhelmed, we’re here to support you. Call us at 212-335-0034 to learn more about therapy and support options.

You don’t have to carry this alone.

Just in case no one has told you…
Becoming a parent doesn’t mean you stop needing care, guidance, or support.

You’re still learning.
Still adjusting.
Still becoming.

Needing help doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you’re human. And parents were never meant to do this alone. 💛

At The Motherhood Center, we care for you so you can care for your baby, with support that honors this transition, not pressures you to “have it all figured out.”

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure, or simply in need of care for yourself, we’re here. Call us to learn how we can support you during pregnancy and postpartum, or visit our website to explore our free support groups and see what might be the right fit for you.
