As you may have noticed from some of my stories, we are a HUGE dessert family. My husband is part of The National Confectioners Association and often times will come home from work or trade shows with TONS of candy. As a Dietitian you would think I wouldn’t enjoy this, but TBH I have welcomed it into our home. So how do I deal with this?!? I eat the candy 😮
There are two schools of thought when it comes to treats, avoidance OR intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is making peace with food. Its eliminating food labels as “good” or “bad” and the concept of tapping into your body’s ability to tell you when you are hungry. AND Avoidance is the idea of “out of site, out of mind”.
Intuitive eating does not come naturally to us as adults and takes work! In my practice I have a complete understanding that not everyone MAY fully participate in this approach. It takes a lot of healing and should be done in conjunction with a mental health expert. Avoidance does work for some, such as with my patients that have been part of OA. There is no RIGHT or WRONG approach with this. Nutrition should be an individualized approach.
MY APPROACH: I find it helpful to have these sweets around and perhaps even have 1 each night because by the time the weekend comes around, I may not even want two scoops of ice cream and just stick with one (or cake slices, cupcakes, etc, you get the idea!)I avoid grazing and plan out what I may want/like. To me, dessert brings me happiness, so I make it part of my day. Im not sure what this approach is called, but it works for me! Happy to help you in finding your approach 😝🍩
