You may remember that two years ago we brought a kid to live with my family at the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Well, he's almost 18 and has been accepted to the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague to study bassoon with his dream teacher.
For those who don't remember his story, I'll share it again here:
About ten years ago, my family met two young Ukrainian brothers at a concert for the Ship of Tolerance. This is a project we run to educate and connect the youth of different continents, cultures, and identities through the language of art.
The younger brother, Dima, carried an instrument that was comically larger than the child himself, but when he played it, the sound was sweet and enchanting.
That concert brought together talented children from many countries, including Ukraine and Russia. Through music, they became friends and even amidst the ravages of war, surmounted their differences in a way adults could not.
When the war broke out, we brought Dima to New York so that he could continue his studies in relative peace.
Two years ago, you all and many others helped raise funds to try and get Vlad, the older brother, out on a student visa but unfortunately he had already turned 18 and was subject to the draft. The money raised was used instead to bring a group of children from Dnipro and a group from Moscow, to play together on stage in Greece. Despite much reluctance and angst, and numerous protests from their parents, the kids put on quite a show and became fast friends.
Meantime, Dima lived with Doug, myself, and our children, joined the New York Youth Symphony, attended LaGuardia High School, studied with one of the best bassoon teachers in the world, Mr. Lenny Hindell, and spent two summers at Interlochen music camp. He learned English and made friends, but in his heart longed for home and family. So last year he returned to Dnipro, hoping the conflict would end. Despite the constant bombardment and shelling around him, he continued to play, and study, and applied and was accepted to the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. As you will read below, it was the culmination of his longed for dream and hard work but now he finds himself unable to jump the very last hurdle: depositing the required amount of cash in an account that guarantees he can pay his first year's tuition and cover his meager living expenses. By US standards it's not an exorbitant sum. But his parents are both musicians living through the third year of war in Dnipro, and the $5000 I was able to give him is just not enough.
If you can find it in your hearts to contribute to the education of this talented young musician, he will repay you in the only way he can - with music, and good will that will hopefully usher in a new era of peace among all of our children.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I've included a recording Dima made recently for your listening pleasure:
