I have worked with some clients today and we spoke about the significance of having a therapist to help you, that sometimes when we try to help ourselves, that cloud is just too thick that we cannot see a way through it, or out of it. So having someone there to organize your thoughts for you and give you tools you may not have, or have forgotten how to use, can be such a healing experience. I explained that when you speak your thoughts out loud, it can be more powerful and fulfilling because not only are you being heard and validated for your experiences, but you are able to put words to all the jumbled thoughts clouding your mind.. you can organize them by speaking them out loud, and find conclusions with feedback and having your therapist ask you the questions you can’t find to ask yourself. I have seen my questions give my clients powerful insight before, and I have had them say “you help me figure out things, you ask the right questions to get me to think a little clearer,” and it’s true. When we are anxious or depressed, the mind becomes shrouded in rumination and/or racing thoughts. Sometimes it is rewarding to have that person that can help you fill your cup. The goal of the therapeutic relationship is to work as a team, to help you heal and grow.
