At last week's Janian NYC Street Psychiatry Conference, an interactive poster presentation session showcased research and projects from students and early-career professionals. It was a chance for medical students, residents, and fellows to share their work and receive feedback from experienced practitioners in an informal, supportive environment.

Poster presentations are a conference tradition that creates space for up-and-coming professionals to be heard. At this conference, the posters were a lively midpoint in the day, drawing small groups into detailed discussions and highlighting the innovative work already underway.

Poster topics included trainee-driven psychiatry programs, closing the gap in mental health care in rural regions, the role of medical students in street medicine, and many more.

What made the inaugural NYC Street Psychiatry Conference so powerful? The people.

Throughout the day, attendees met face-to-face, some for the first time after years of working in parallel. Peers swapped stories over coffee and lunch, former teams reunited, and providers shared hard-won insights, tough cases, and new ideas. There were hugs, laughter, deep conversations, and moments of recognition for just how far this field has come.

We didn’t just talk about street psychiatry, we lived it. We connected across agencies, disciplines, and lived experience to celebrate what’s possible when care is rooted in relationships.

Thank you to everyone who brought your full self to the room. You made this day unforgettable.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the inaugural Janian NYC Street Psychiatry Conference! It was a day filled with energy and reflection, grounded in a deep commitment to meeting clients wherever they are—whether that’s on the sidewalk, in a shelter, or somewhere in between.

Together, we explored what it means to provide care outside traditional settings, using storytelling to spark ideas and build a shared sense of purpose. The passion running through each panel, workshop, and conversation reminded us that healing is possible anywhere.

Your voices made this vision real, and the path forward feels stronger because we’re walking it together.

The Consumer Advisory Board (CAB), founded by Janian Medical Care in 2012, ensures healthcare services are shaped by the voices of people with lived experience of homelessness. Made up of 8–10 members who have faced significant mental and physical health challenges, CAB provides critical input on all new clinical projects and serves on key committees.

They’ve led more than 25 outreach events, connecting over 2,000 New Yorkers to harm reduction tools, mental health screenings, and care. CAB’s leadership has been recognized with a national community service award and the PPOH Teaching Award. Their work has shaped Grand Rounds, influenced provider training, and elevated peer-led care across the city.

What was it like when you first arrived at Washington Street Safe Haven?

"My first day, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. I was still foggy at the time. But after a few days, I realized I was safe. The staff was working together to help me. They made sure I got the medications I needed. They connected me with a wonderful primary care doctor, someone I still see to this day."

This Independence Day we reflect on the promise of freedom and the work still required to make it real for everyone.

At CUCS we support people in building lives of dignity, stability, and self-determination because true liberty includes a safe home and access to care.

IMT is designed for individuals experiencing persistent homelessness and mental illness such as schizophrenia. These individuals often cycle through hospitals, jails, and shelters without stable access to treatment or care.

When someone with schizophrenia leaves the hospital, staying connected to psychiatric care can be life-saving.

The national average of follow-up care is 33.8%

📈With CUCS IMT support? 91.8% 📈

CUCS’s IMT program ensures people with serious mental illness don’t fall through the cracks by providing consistent, mobile psychiatric care long after discharge.

For CUCS, support doesn’t end at discharge, it begins there.
