Friday night NUR space hosted a fundraiser for the community meal train. The threat of rain had me nervous all day but it held off until we were cleaning up.
Our people showed up with food to share and made donations. We laughed, ate passion fruit ice cream, snuggled each others babies and connected. It took me a few days to really let it all sink in. We are blessed to have one another.
Thank you to everyone who donated to the raffle (tagged) and to all of you who bought tickets.
Shout out to Kayla who pulled this together with me while deep in midwifery school.
Head over to .space to join the volunteer list to get baby announcement and make donations when you can or a one time donation link on the website.
To many more garden parties! 🎉🌳

Happy International Homebirth Day!

Today made me reflect back to this birth just a month ago. This mama worked so SO hard to push out her sweet boy. As we went into the night, I looked at her affirmation wall with love notes from friends guiding her through. Friends whose babies I’ve caught 💕I love how connected my clients are. Even though homebirth continues to be a small percentage of births in this country, it is growing! Fast! Shout out your homebirth today and every chance you get. Shout out your homebirth midwife!

I hope many of you catch the homebirth bug 🐞.

A year ago today your mama, my big sister was in early labor. I was introducing to the Green Meadow community by proudly showing him around the Fall Fair, making him smell all of the beeswax candles and eating maple candy. At the same time the butterflies of having someone in labor were stirring. People asked about and I would just smile and hold in my excitement. Fast forward, the sun was beginning to set and we took a walk down Joyce Drive and quickly had to make our way back home as things were picking up. Amina got into the shower and I called .

It was a Saturday night and we were in the home we grew up in. All of our people were walking by. You could feel the warmth and love and how special this particular moment was. All of our worlds and experiences colliding. Amina made her way into the boys room which was the room we shared growing up. She knelt between their beds. Val and I glowing because we knew it was near. Our mother holding Amina and Murat by her side. Latifa quickly slid out into the world, a tiny little spirit, into my hands.

We all knew she would be a girl without knowing. It simply was. There was no surprise.

She was perfectly tiny and so immediately loved. We called our family to announce that the baby was born. Everyone was praying-perfectly timed with her arrival.

It was no easy task midwifing my big sister as I planned my weddings around her due date. Although I was present for the birth of the boys, I was responsible for Latifa. And my into my hands she came. Her tiny spirit. Today marks her first year with us. She is joyous, loud and playful and so unbelievably loved. Happy day of birth little Tifa. But today we also honor . For she carried you, birthed you and continues to nurture you each and every day.

Midwives play a very important role in the health care system in Haiti. "This project will supply 300 Haitian midwives, spanning across the ten departments of Haiti, with the protective gear (masks, gloves, soap, hand sanitizer) they need to safely take care of women, girls and newborns. It will also provide masks for the families they serve. Midwives will also provide free education within their communities on the Coronavirus (facts/debunking myths, proper hand washing, mask wearing/making, implications on pregnancy and breastfeeding and gender-based violence)." Please make a donation.

We will be muted our content June 1-7 to participate in challenge. We will only be sharing content supporting .

Our silence will allow us to listen, learn and support. As midwives, listening to our clients is what makes care unique, individual and safe. Listening is what we should be inherently good at. We take this time to hone in on that skill show up.

Thank you & .msrd

"We agree that Dr. McClelland’s knowledge is limited to the universe that is his hospital – a universe that boasts a cesarean birth rate of 38.9%. As experts in vaginal and out of hospital birth, we are happy to enlighten him about both, including how we facilitate a relationship of partnership and trust with our clients, how we make judicious use of the medications and tools available to us to mitigate risk and manage complications, and how we are experienced in facilitating hospital transfer in a timely way that generally does not require emergency transport."
Robina Khalid for the NY Home Birth Collective. Brilliant response. Please read and share.
