As the final candle of the Kinara (a seven-branched candle holder) is lit, those who celebrate this holiday reflect on all the principles of Kwanzaa: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. If that includes you, COMMENT a highlight from Kwanzaa. From lighting the Kinara to attending a community event, we can’t wait to read your responses!

In a season filled with connection and community, we’re thrilled Spectrum News NY1 featured MJHS Hospice volunteer Karima in a TV special honoring ‘New Yorkers of the Week’ for the ways they gave back in 2025. Karima visits with some of our youngest patients and their families.

Her impact is so incredible that the station featured her this past summer. Now, in this segment, Karima shares more about who inspired her to start volunteering in hospice care and what motivates her to visit with patients week after week.

Congratulations to all the New Yorkers who’ve been highlighted this year and before. ❤️ Karima is in such great company!

Every night, those who celebrate will light a candle on the Kinara (a seven-branched candle holder) representing the principle of the day. Do you celebrate Kwanzaa? COMMENT with a photo of your Kinara. Bonus points if you tell us what today’s principle of unity means to you.
