Like all humans I have had my share of grief and loss in this life:

The dissolution of my marriage and along with it, my heart into a million tiny pieces.

The cessation of future dreams and ideas I thought would once come to pass.

The death of beloved family members; grandparents now ancestors, cousins taken far too soon, favorite aunts no longer here to share holidays.

And, most recently the loss of my best friend, my fur baby, my companion, and the best feline ANYONE could ever come to know, Cooper.

I’m sure you have a list of heartbreaks too.
And, for that I extend you my deep compassion and empathy.

Being human is a gift, but it is also HARD AS F**K!

Grief and death (in whatever form) are top on the list of hard things we humans try diligently to shield ourselves from.

We don’t want it personally and quite honestly we have a hard time sitting with it when others are experiencing it.

And, that is ok.
It’s understandable really.

Our goal as beings who want to survive is to stay away from pain & hurt and turn towards pleasure & light.

But, guess what!?!
REAL life requires we play with BOTH.

I know, “play” is an unusual word to use with grief.

But, if there is one thing I have learned this go round with my friend Mr. Grief is that the less we fear and the more curious we get the better off our healing will be.

Cuz here’s a truth that might sting the back of your throat:
There is nothing more guaranteed in life than death!

And, when the worst thing happens… when we lose what we value… we can not become afraid of our grief!

Because if we do we will be rushed to “move on” from it versus moving forward with it.

The idea of “moving on” from a trauma or loss completely abandons all possibilities for healing and growth.

The truth is we never REALLY move on from any of our past pains. Thinking you can just pack that sh&t up in a box and move onto the next step is wildly reductive to the human process.

What we humans ACTUALLY need for whole human wellness is time to feel the emotions, yes even the uncomfortable ones, process them, give meaning to the event, and THEN move forward with all of those lessons in tact.

Yesterday was the day that I have been fearing for about two years now.

Yesterday, I had to tell my best friend that I would see him later, that I’d find him again, somehow, some way, on whatever plane of existence we both shared next.

Cooper was my most stable and reliable male companion since I was 20, the age he was yesterday when I witnessed him take his last breath.

Not only was Cooper the most special feline to walk the earth, but he was also the most open, loving, strong, and courageous soul I’ve ever come to know.

Over the past two years he used ALLL of his 9 lives fighting and coming back from various neurological events and episodes, and yesterday we was finally ready to rest.

Anyone who says the loss of the pet is any less painful, heartbreaking, and soul splitting than losing a human has clearly never been blessed by the beautiful connection humans CAN HAVE with animals.

Cooper was my soul mate.
And, I am convinced we have known each other much longer than these 20 earth side years.

Although I am gutted by his absence, I truly believe his spirit is now free from his aged body and able to once again swim, jump, run, fly, or do wherever it pleases. Renewed.
Reinvigorated.

If you have known me AT ALL - you KNOW Cooper. His nickname is The Don, because well he is such a damn G.

At one point in his life he lived with 3 PIT BULLS and kept them plus my human ass in check at all times!
Do you know any other 🐱 who could do that?

He was famous at our vet for being THE OLDEST Cat they’ve ever had as a patient. In fact, just this month I was notified that he had been voted as Pet of the Quarter at our veterinarian’s office.

Long story short, he was soooo fu***ng special and sooooo fu***ng loved not only by me, but by everyone who was lucky enough to cross paths with him.

I feel nothing short of blessed to have had his partnership for as long as I have. It has been one the greatest gifts of my life.

And, I don’t doubt that I will miss him forever.

Just because you cannot witness it with your eye does not mean it doesn’t exist.

This holds true for MANY things in life:
Magic
Love
Sadness
Mental Illness

These are all invisible.
But, they are ALL profound, influential, and REAL.

For the purpose of today’s discussion, I am going to speak about the last item on that list.

Full disclosure:
Since I can remember I’ve struggled with my mental health.

And, I am talking like vivid memories of me fighting my emotions and what they felt like in my body since as early as adolescence.

S**t... there are a whole plethora of baby photos where I legit have my hands clenched in fists. On. The. Regular 👊🏻

I FEEL things and I feel them in technicolor!

Sometimes that’s great and sometimes it makes my skin crawl.

And yet, as I explain that to you now, the best I can do is describe what it feels like in euphemisms, analogies, and adjectives, because you can’t SEE what I’m talking about.

You can’t see mental illness and pain like you can see a bruise or look at a cat scan.

But, that does not make it any less real.

Because, it is an invisible condition it can be so easily overlooked, undervalued, and sadly dismissed.

But, today I call bu****it on that!

If you struggle with mental health or even the quality of your mental landscape day to day please know that I SEE YOU!

I know it is a valid challenge.

I know it is just as disruptive to your life as a tooth ache or heart murmur.

I know it’s ok to take days off to attend to it (just like you would a tooth ache or heart murmur).

I also know the more you talk about it the less invisible it seems and the more manageable it becomes.... to you and those who love and support you!

So share your story and remember your strength, you beautiful Human, YOU!

You can handle hard things.

How do I know this?

Because you’ve handled them before!

Whatever issue you’re currently dealing with I’m willing to bet is not your first “big fish”.

This may not be the same kind, or weight, or fesitiness but you have handled plenty of hard things in your past so, even tho and scene when it is hard, TRUST that you can handle this too!

And, the more we handle hard things in life, versus deny them and run away from them, the more capable we will feel navigating the next challenge.

This builds confidence in our agency and ultimately results in resilience levels on fleek.

So, the next time you question whether or not you can do it... remember the last time some person or or something tested your ability!

Yea, that’s right!!
I think NOT!

The stories we tell are not only culturally significant, but MOST importantly, they facilitate HEALING.

This healing extends beyond the teller, through to the listener, into the community, eventually seeping into ears the teller never would have imagined to hold an audience with.

When we experience life events, grand or small, happy or painful, in company or in solitude we create stories around those moments.

As free thinking and evolving humans this helps us sort and process the events we live through.

What becomes vital in this process is the context and quality we embed into our stories.

This infusion has a HEAVY influence on how we recall stories later and also how those stories affect our mental landscape.

Let me give you an example:

Two humans are going through a divorce. Each with a near identical experience.

One human indulgences in a victim mindset. Focusing on all the things that were “done to them” during the marriage. How unfair the experience is considering how well they way they behaved / showed up. Ruminating on the ways in which they were wronged, mislead, even abused.

The other human, with remember...a similar (sh*tty) experience, chooses to create a story of empowerment once the divorce process ensues. Using the rough moment and deep challenge as opportunity to better themselves, to learn, to expand, to reinvest in their other relationships. And, to write the story of their own design, not hinges upon someone else’s actions.

Who’s story do you think will create more healing?
Not only for them, but remember that human also has an audience!
And, those people will one day have an audience too.

Can you imagine what it feels like to listen to story number two?
Better yet, what that story of empowerment and strength would do if the listener was also going through a divorce themselves??

It’d be inspiring as f**k!

Stories matter.

They matter for many more reasons than embalming cultural memories.

They matter because your mental health is so dependent upon them!

And, quite frankly the stories we carry travel, and far.

So, they matter not only to you but also to the mental fabric of all those who happen to listen to them!
