Let’s talk SEROTONIN!​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​A neurotransmitter is our body’s “chemical messengers” that allows our bodies to function the way it does, depending on certain triggers to our nervous system. Did you know this particular neurotransmitter called Serotonin plays a crucial role in our mental well-being?

Here are 3 reasons why it's so important:

1️⃣ Mood Regulation: Serotonin is often called the "happy chemical" because it helps regulate mood and promote feelings of happiness and well-being. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to conditions like depression and anxiety.

2️⃣ Sleep Quality: Serotonin helps regulate our sleep-wake cycle. It's involved in the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls sleep patterns. Adequate serotonin levels contribute to better sleep quality, which is essential for overall mental health.

As we raise awareness on Stress Awareness Month, let’s look back on the possible causes of why we experience stress. One culprit would be a hormone called “Cortisol” which is called the stress hormone. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​3 Facts about “Cortisol” would include the following:
1. Cortisol is also known as the “Stress Hormone”, but is medically known as “hydrocortisone”
2. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. It helps regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism and immune response, and plays a role in the body's "fight or flight" response to stress.
3. Chronic stress can lead to elevated cortisol levels, which may have negative effects on an individual's health over time.

Knowing these facts, let’s strive to navigate through knowing how our bodies work, and how stress travels through our body. This way, we’d also be more capable of fighting stress and keeping it a manageable level!
