What is that 6 month check up all about?

Taking your child to the dentist every 6 months is an important part of taking care of his/her oral health. This routine visit is important so that your child’s mouth could be monitored for any signs of pathology as well as proper development.

Why every six months? Waiting too long between visits may mean missed opportunities to address issues in early stages. Catching things early allows for conservative treatment to be a good option.

What happens during this visit? The dentist will start off with a cleaning. Contrary to popular belief, this is not necessarily the most important part of the visit. The task of removing plaque from the teeth is crucial in and of itself, however its biggest accomplishment is allowing a thorough exam. With plaque, food and debris removed, the dentist could carefully inspect every surface of every tooth in the mouth, as well as all surrounding structures such as the gums, mucosa, tongue and palate, to name a few. The dentist will then share any concerns he/she may have, and provide anticipatory guidance for what’s to come. Radiographs may be taken at a six month recall, but only if absolutely necessary. Finally, the dentist will provide a topical fluoride treatment to help strengthen the teeth so they could continue to fight those cavities!

How to prepare for the six month check up: maintain a positive attitude! Keep telling your child how much fun the dentist appointment will be, and how excited you are to go. Your child feeds off your energy very much, and needs that extra bit of encouragement and support. You could prep your child further by explaining the dentist will brush his/her teeth, count his/her teeth, and paint on a “vitamin paint” that will make his/her teeth extra strong. Have fun with it!

We can’t wait to see you and your little one at your next visit!

What are dental sealants?
Here at Upper East Pediatric Dentistry, we prioritize prevention as much as we can.
Dental sealants are an important part of this approach. A dental sealant is a
tooth-colored material that is flowed onto the biting surfaces of teeth, creating a barrier
between a tooth’s grooves and pits and the oral environment. This prevents food,
plaque and bacteria from getting trapped in these highly retentive areas that are extra
susceptible to developing cavities. That’s how dental sealants to reduce up to 76% of
cavities on biting surfaces of permanent first molars as measured at four years, when
reapplied as needed! (Bravo M, Montero J, Bravo JJ, Baca P, Llodra JC. Sealant and
fluoride varnish in caries: a randomized trial. J Dent Res 2005;84(12):1138-1143.)
Does this mean that a sealed tooth can never get a cavity? Unfortunately, no. The tooth
can still get cavities on other surfaces, such as those that approximate neighboring
teeth. However, dental sealants reduce the risk of a cavity forming on a surface that’s
extra susceptible to cavities. Seeing your dentist regularly also allows your dentist to
check the dental sealants and touch them up as needed, to ensure their effectiveness.
What is the application process? To increase the longevity of the dental sealant, the
tooth must be kept dry during application. This means the dentist will hold the cheek
and tongue away from the tooth to avoid it getting wet. Once proper isolation is
achieved, the dentist will apply a few different materials to help clean and prepare the
tooth for the dental sealant. Finally, the dentist will flow the sealant into its proper spot,
and shine a light onto it so it hardens from a liquid into a solid. That’s it! What an easy
way to help prevent cavities and avoid drilling into teeth!

Why are early childhood dental visits important?

“When should I start bringing my child to the dentist?” is a common question we are presented with. The answer is simple: as soon as your child has teeth, or by age one! It may seem early, but there are several sound reasons for this timeline.

Child comfort: The earlier a child is introduced to a dental office, the more comfortable he/she will be in such a setting. By bringing your child in at a young age, you are setting him/her up for a positive approach toward dental visits for the rest of his/her life. It’s wonderful to see many of our returning patients comfortable with the space and staff, and excited for each visit.

Prevention: If a dentist is given the opportunity to monitor a child’s teeth every six months starting at a young age, he/she will be able to take preventive measures to ensure oral health. In addition to the parental education discussed below, these preventive measures include regular fluoride treatments and/or other procedures that could help susceptible teeth fight off cavities. This proactive approach may make the difference for your child to not need his/her teeth drilled for fillings! If a child does have cavities that require treatment, early detection allows for more conservative treatment.

Parent education: There are many do’s and don’t’s when it comes to taking care of a child’s mouth. Firstly, a dentist will discuss proper hygiene techniques for teeth, gums and tongue. Secondly, a dentist may review the most “teeth-friendly” snacks, drinks, and timing for consumption. A dentist may also go over habits that may have negative consequences on a child’s jawbones and teeth, and work with families to develop appropriate habit-breaking tactics. These habits may include thumb-sucking, pacifier use, teeth grinding, and/or fingernail biting. Finally, a good pediatric dentist will get to know the families he/she works with and tailor our approach to ensure a parent knows how to meet all of his/her child’s dental needs. Many of our patients walk out saying “Wow, I learned a lot about how to care for my child’s teeth today! I didn’t know a lot of that!"

Finances: You may be surprised to see this as a reason for taking your child to the dentist early, but studies show that the dental costs for children who have their first dental visit before age one are 40% lower in the first five years than for those who do not see a dentist prior to their first birthday.

Make sure to establish a dental home with a caring team to keep your little ones’ mouths healthy. Remember that you’re always welcome to become a member of the Upper East Side Pediatric Dentistry family!

Keep your healthy during

Doctor's Rule: Be selective.

Choose treats that cause the least damage to teeth. Instead of caramels and hard candies, choose chocolates, which are swallowed quickly and don’t stick to teeth. Avoid any candies that are acidic or chewy. Don't forget that even “healthy” snacks like pretzels and crackers can promote decay.

Admira Fusion ceramic fillings are often used in small to mid-size restoration, as they provide strength, durability, and resistance to fracture. Like with traditional composite fillings, the shade of ceramic fillings will closely match the patient’s actual teeth, so that others will not be aware that work has been done.
Advantages of Admira Fusion ceramic include:
100% plastic free
100% BPA free
High color stability
Translucency and opacity which allow fillings to blend in with the affected tooth’s structure and surrounding teeth
Environmentally friendly
No mercury or toxic metal exposure
