Unbeknownst by many, Medusa was r***d by Poseidon and then blamed by Athena who cursed her and turned her hair into snakes that turned men into stone when they gazed upon her. Medusa is herself blamed and punished for the crime in which she was the victim.

Due to the rise in domestic violence, and to combat victim shaming in stories of sexual violence, the Luciano Garbati 7-foot statue of Medusa holding the head of Perseus, in an inverted narrative of the mythological story, will be on display outside the NY County Criminal Court!

As a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, I continue to care for victims of domestic violence and have observed an exponential increase in cases that have been exacerbated by these trying times. While we as doctors can help heal wounds and mend bones, it is as a society that we must come together to support and end these atrocities. Thank you and New York City Department of Parks & Recreation for putting this issue front and center.

Dr. Ulysses Scarpidis attended the esteemed Albert Einstein College of Medicine . He completed his residency and fellowship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Hackensack University Medical Center.

Dr. Scarpidis was a clinical investigator in laser liposuction, and he presented guidelines for the safe and efficient use of this technology, his research on the faces natural aging process, and techniques for facial rejuvenation, at numerous national plastic surgery conferences.

His work has earned him the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgery Clinical Poster Competition Award two years in a row.

When he isn’t helping his patients, Dr. Scarpidis enjoys sailing and tennis. He also speaks English, Greek and French, and Italian.

He is a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The CDC recommends the following:

• Stay home when you are sick.
• Practice good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Plan how you will take care of sick family members. Make plans for childcare if you or your child are ill.
• Have a thermometer at home so you can check for fever if you or a loved one feels ill.
• Try to get a few extra months’ worths of your prescription medications, if possible.
• Stay informed – check the CDC site regularly for new updates.
