5 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress When You’re Living with Hyperthyroidism

Stress can make hyperthyroid symptoms worse but there are things you can do to help your body feel more balanced.

1. Prioritize Sleep
Your body heals and resets while you sleep. Even just improving your nighttime routine can make a big difference.

2. Move Your Body
Gentle movement like walking or yoga can lower stress hormones and boost mood—without overwhelming your system.

3. Make Time to Unwind
Even 15 minutes of journaling, deep breathing, or doing something creative can calm your nervous system.

4. Eat to Support Your Thyroid
Fueling up on whole foods, healthy fats, protein, and fiber can help regulate mood, energy, and inflammation.

5. Don’t Do It Alone
Talk to a friend, join a support group, or work with a coach or holistic provider. Having support matters more than you think.

If you’re feeling burned out and stuck, you’re not alone and you don’t have to figure it out solo. We’re here to help.

Healthy relationships need vitamin D too.

This summer, take your connection outside, walks, beach days, coffee on the porch. Fresh air and sunlight aren’t just good for your mood and circadian rhythm, they’re great for conversations that flow instead of feeling forced.

Less screens, more sunshine. Your nervous system and your relationship will thank you.

Lifestyle Habits to Naturally Reduce Fatigue with Hyperthyroidism

If you’re feeling drained, you’re not alone. Fatigue is a common (and frustrating) symptom of hyperthyroidism, but there are simple daily habits that can help your body feel more supported and steady.

1. Gentle Movement That Recharges You
Skip the high-intensity workouts. Gentle activities like walking, yoga, or tai chi are easier on your nervous system and help ease anxiety and boost energy without burning you out.

2. Daily Stress Relief (That Actually Works)
Simple practices like deep breathing, journaling, short nature breaks, or guided meditation can help calm your system and ease that “wired but tired” feeling.

3. Adaptogenic Herbs (With a Little Caution)
Certain herbs may help your body manage stress like ashwagandha for anxiety or rhodiola for fatigue, but they’re not all safe for hyperthyroidism. Always check with your provider before adding them to your routine.

4. Know When It’s Time to Reach Out
If you’re dealing with rapid heart rate, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest, it’s time to talk to a professional. At HealthierU, we take a root-cause approach to help you restore balance and feel more like yourself again.

Can hyperthyroidism cause weight gain?

Wait… isn’t that the opposite of what we’ve always heard?

It’s true that hyperthyroidism typically speeds up metabolism, which can lead to weight loss. But for some people, especially if the condition is fluctuating or if they’ve been overtreated, weight gain can absolutely happen.

Hormones are complex, thyroid, cortisol, insulin, and more all work together. So if you’re gaining weight and feeling off, even with a hyperthyroid diagnosis, you’re not imagining it. Your body’s just asking for balance, not blame.

Be gentle with yourself. The scale doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Anyone else feel like a totally different person every week of your cycle? It’s not random, it’s your hormones doing their thing.

Cycle syncing by adjusting your food, workouts, and even social life based on your hormonal shifts, can make a huge difference. Think: strength training when estrogen is high, rest and comfort food during PMS, and more ease around expectations all month long.

We’re not built to operate like machines and the more we work with our cycle, the more energy, clarity, and self-compassion we can actually access. It’s not a flaw, it’s your hidden superpower.

Can stress trigger hyperthyroidism?
It might surprise you, but yes! Chronic stress can play a role in triggering or worsening hyperthyroidism, especially in people who are already at risk.

While stress doesn’t directly cause the condition, it can disrupt the immune system and throw hormone levels out of balance. This is especially true with Graves’ disease, the most common form of hyperthyroidism, which is autoimmune.

If you’ve been feeling anxious, wired, or unusually tired and life’s been especially stressful, it’s worth paying attention. Your thyroid could be part of the picture.

Taking steps to manage stress isn’t just good for your mindset, it’s also powerful support for your hormones and overall health.

If your jeans suddenly feel tight after a totally normal meal, you’re not imagining things. Bloating and gut weirdness have become way too common, and while it’s frustrating, it’s also your body’s way of speaking up.

Gut health is about so much more than just digestion. Stress, hormones, poor sleep, and inflammatory foods can all throw things off. Instead of chasing a perfect diet, try noticing what your body actually responds well to, like slowing down while eating, more fiber, and supporting your nervous system too.

No shame. No guilt. Just getting curious and learning what helps your body feel more at ease.

Why does hyperthyroidism cause fatigue?
It seems confusing. If your thyroid is overactive, shouldn’t you have more energy?

The truth is, hyperthyroidism puts your body into overdrive. Your heart races, your sleep gets disrupted, your muscles may break down, and your metabolism burns through fuel too quickly. It’s like your body’s running a marathon 24/7... without rest.

That constant stress on your system can leave you feeling wired and exhausted at the same time.

If you’re dealing with fatigue that doesn’t make sense, it’s not in your head, your body is working overtime. Supporting your thyroid, balancing your nervous system, and nourishing your body can help you feel steady again.

You might not just be “bad at sleeping”, your nervous system might be stuck in go-mode.

When we spend all day multitasking, over-caffeinating, and pushing through, our body can have a hard time winding down at night. That’s why you might feel exhausted but still struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Supporting your nervous system can be as simple as a wind-down routine: dim the lights, skip the late scroll, sip something calming, and take a few deep belly breaths. Think of it as sending your body the message, “You’re safe now. You can rest.”

Small shifts really do add up, and better sleep can change everything.

• Spark fresh ideas and mental clarity

No fancy gear. No gym membership. Just you, a sidewalk or trail, and a little intention. Bonus points for sunshine and a good playlist.
