February is American Heart Month. With the return of cold weather, OEM reminds New Yorkers to take precautions before performing strenuous tasks outdoors. Low temperatures place added strain on the heart, and hospitalizations for heart-related problems increase by more than 50 percent in winter. Remember to stretch, stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks when working outdoors in cold weather.

Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health conditions. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia, by keeping warm.

After a series of snow storms this winter, we want to remind people of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. New Yorkers can avoid carbon monoxide poisoning by clearing snow from exhaust pipes before starting vehicle engines, avoid running vehicles in enclosed spaces clearing snow from the vents of combustion appliances and never heating your home with a stove or oven. Stay safe! Winter is almost over!
