I have been working with 1 student who has osteoarthritis of the knee and other pain near the knee. We work remotely as we live many states apart. Over the almost 2 years we have working together using Forrest Yoga, she now feels very little pain below her knee and no pain in the knee. She also walks once or twice a week when the weather is good. Mindful movement does help to mitigate joint pain.

"Your joints aren't just like your automobile tires that wear out as you use them," he says. In fact, exercise helps nutrients diffuse into cartilage in the knee and keep it strong and healthy.

If cartilage "is formed and more healthy when you're younger, then your joints are more likely to be functioning better and have less osteoarthritis when you get older," Loeser says. And exercise also helps fully grown people.

"By strengthening your muscles and by stimulating your cartilage you can still improve the health of your joint," Loeser says.

Even after a Harvard team took into account differences in age and weight among ancient specimens and knees today, they found that modern humans tend to have more osteoarthritis.

The story about Forrest Yoga is often that it's "too intense," "the teachers are mean and opinionated," "all that abdominal work is not yoga," and my personal favorite, "they'll make you cry." The truth is, Forrest Yoga is the kindest yoga I've ever prac

Pranayama is a part of most yoga classes. Forrest Yoga is practiced with Ujjayi through the almost the whole class slowing the breath down, deepening the breath and allowing the mind to focus on the breath and then to follow the sound of the breath inside. Watch Shayna demo Ujjayi breath in the video on this page. I have found this pranayama also helpful at night if I am having trouble falling asleep.

Breath is essential to life. It's the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing we do when we leave. Find out how pranayama can heal your mind and body, and learn about four deep breathing techniques to try.
