This trip around the sun was magical made with memories, lots of love, emotions and music!! So many friends and strangers who made the last few weeks stepping into my personal new year Amazing and to cap part one off in for the very first time but not the last was amazing!! To chapter two because like any Libra with a milestone birthday I’mma a do it again ⚖️🤷🏾‍♀️♎️😑😂

My friend asked me what I was doing? I told him I’m waiting until 12 am to wish my son happy birthday; if he doesn’t hit me to wish me one first. ⁣

As soon as the clock struck 12 my son hit me on the text to wish me a happy birthday and I laughed. I called him on FaceTime and immediately started to cry. ⁣
⁣
Man he has been my rider for 24 years and we have been through so much. ⁣
⁣
But God!!.. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I just want to say I am amazed and in awe of the journey these last 24 years have taken us on and I can’t even imagine doing them with anyone else. ⁣⁣

I told him my favorite part of my birthday every year when he was little was waking him up early on our birthday just to say…⁣
⁣
“Happy Birthday Aru” and hear that little voice reply “Happy Birthday Mommy.” Here’s to many many more. ⁣⁣

Last year when the world shut down this little beach by my house was my refuge. ⁣

Now that I’ve been able to travel a bit I didn’t know how I’d feel about going to my little city beach. But truth is it makes me grateful to God that it’s here and I’m here to enjoy it! ⁣

Who else remembers that from the Girl Scouts? ⁣

Today is Day and as a former member one of my proudest moments was when I came back as a mentor young Girl Scouts at an event here in Brooklyn, where I was also a young Girl Scout.⁣
⁣
Being a Girl Scout is one of my finest memories because it was something my mom (who was a troop leader), my older sister and I did together. ⁣
⁣
When I mentored the young women of the Girl Scouts a few years ago. I was so happy to see them cultivating the smart and bright young minds of the future. They were super impressive and motivated me to get more involved in the organization again as an adult.⁣

I am so honored to have been chosen by my fellow social workers to help fight to for culturally competent care and making sure all social workers and incoming social workers are living up to social work values set forth in our code of ethics. ⁣

Which calls for us to work in service of social justice initiatives and to fight against oppression. I am humbled to be given the opportunity and can’t wait to formally accept later on this week. ⁣
⁣
I want to thank all of you who have supported me in this journey and definitely thank those who voted for me. I look forward to exceeding your expectations and making social workers and my community proud. ⁣

My name is Nikita Banks, LCSW and I am running for vice-president as NYS-NASW Vice President and I need your VOTE.

All eyes are on NYS, the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The role of social workers is paramount as we report to the frontlines to help the public and fellow health care workers cope with the trauma that is our new normal. New Yorkers will have to rebuild the economy all the while prioritizing both
health and safety.

Mental health will play a significant part.

We saw understandable national support for nurses and doctors, some being offered unprecedented incentives and top pay to work in our state.

We also answered the call yet we're asked to volunteer. Constantly fighting for acknowledgment as licensed professionals who deserve hazard pay.

Social workers are essential.

Yet we work without significant wage increases or comparable pay like our counterparts. We are notoriously great at advocating for our clients but not for ourselves. As your vice-president & Chair of Diversity, I am committed to building widespread community awareness about what we do. Help craft cohesive messaging aimed to increase clarity, public awareness and why it's in the nations best interest that we succeed and thrive. While both increasing culturally diverse client access, while advocating for equitable pay. Let me champion that cause.
