The Art Therapy Project

The Art Therapy Project The Art Therapy Project provides group art therapy for people in need of mental health services.

The Art Therapy Project is a nonprofit mental health organization providing free group art therapy to adults and youth affected by trauma. Using the art-making process and with support from our art therapists, clients learn how to explore feelings, increase self-awareness and cope with life's challenges.

Mindful Movement Exercise – Begin this exercise by keeping your focus on the movement of your oil pastels, chalk, or whichever medium you choose, rather than what the art looks like as a final product. Focusing this way can help release stress, tension, and challenging thoughts as you sink into the art-making. Allow your focus to rest on your own movement, while the layering of colors and textures emerging in front of you creates a mindful flow that supports emotional regulation.

Read more about the creation of a new program that paves the path for graduate study in art therapy:

From Hurricane Katrina survivors to Alzheimer's patients, art therapy has proved a powerful form of healing. But because the practice blends both art and psychology, many undergraduate paths to a career in the field require students to pursue psychology first and art second (or vice versa).

Save the date! Back by popular demand, we’re excited to welcome friends and families to the second annual Craft and Care fundraiser. Kids ages 1+ (and adults, too!) can get crafty and dive into art activities facilitated by Super Stories and while supporting a meaningful cause.

Special thanks to our friends Westbeth Artists Housing and Center for the Arts for hosting us in their amazing space and Herb-n-Peach for providing delicious bites and beverages.

All proceeds from Craft and Care support art therapy programs for youth and young adults. The event is co-chaired by TATP board members Grace Lang and Sarah Staller.

“Children are witnesses to history, too... They see the reactions of the adults around them, and they are affected by it. This exhibit documents their experience of September 11. How children felt grief and trauma, and how they processed it.”
