July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which was passed on July 26, 1990. Legislation that prohibits discrimination based on disability. On Disability Pride Month we honor that disabilities are natural and part of human diversity. As a society, we can embrace each person’s uniqueness and reject ableism.

The disability pride flag has five diagonal stripes of different colors that lay on a black background. The black background represents victims of violence and abuse in the disabled community. The diagonal suggests cutting across barriers that separate the disabled from society. The flag has five colors that represent different types of disabilities:

-Red for physical disabilities
-Gold for neurodivergence
-White for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
-Blue for psychiatric disabilities
-Green for sensory disabilities
