There’s a common misconception that with proper vocal technique, your voice should be able to withstand anything. And don’t get us wrong, proper vocal technique and training is critical for building vocal stamina and fostering longevity of the voice. That’s why voice therapy exists.
But just like any other part of your body, your voice has its limits. Even with PERFECT vocal technique, there’s a point at which too much voicing is too much voicing. In this case, the best thing you can do for your voice is rest.
That’s why it’s important to learn to listen to your body and listen to your voice - it’s part of your body. You may be have perfect technique, but after a period of substantial voice use, if your voice is feeling tired or the quality is changing, it may have nothing to do with your technique and everything to do with your vocal load (the amount that you’re using your voice).
So it’s important to listen to your voice when it’s telling you it’s time to rest. Think of resting as a part of vocal care that is just as essential as practice.
