Dr. Brendan G. Carr, Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System, moderated a dynamic panel at the Concordia Summit on lessons from our groundbreaking health care partnership called AMPATH Nepal.

The conversation featured Dr. Biraj Karmacharya, Administrative Director of Dhulikhel Hospital in Nepal, and Dr. Rachel Vreeman, Director of the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Together, they underscored how this long-term, trust-based partnership is creating a sustainable model for global collaboration—one that begins with local priorities and addresses critical needs, from youth and adolescent health to cancer care. These efforts demonstrate how enduring partnerships can expand access to high-quality care, provide mutual benefits, and strengthen health systems worldwide.

The liver plays a powerful — and often overlooked — role in breast cancer risk. It’s responsible for breaking down hormones like estrogen. And what else does the liver famously process? Alcohol. That connection is critical: elevated estrogen levels can fuel certain breast cancers, and when alcohol is added to the mix — competing for the liver’s attention — the risks can climb even higher.

In this week's episode of The Vitals, Dr. Elisa Port, Chief of Breast Surgery and Director of Mount Sinai’s Dubin Breast Center, unpacks the science, the risks, and what every patient needs to know.

In her mid-40s, Carol Lee was living an active, creative life when sudden changes in her period led to a diagnosis she never expected: stage 2 endometrial cancer. Under the care of Dr. Stephanie Blank, she underwent a hysterectomy and radiation—choosing to focus on life and healing over fertility.

At first, Carol kept her diagnosis private, telling only her boyfriend and brother. That isolation began to lift when she discovered Mount Sinai’s Woman2Woman program, a peer support network for gynecologic cancer patients. “Having a group of women who truly understood what I was going through was incredibly empowering,” she says. What started as a source of comfort turned into purpose—Carol became a mentor, newsletter editor, and even designed the program’s wig initiative.

Today, she and her partner have launched a nonprofit to raise awareness for women impacted by 9/11-related cancers. “Cancer is scary, but you can get through it—especially when you find the right care and the right community.”

It started like any other day—until it wasn’t. On the morning of Thursday, February 20, Frank Parlatore, Jr., a member of the Environmental Services team at Mount Sinai Queens, was preparing for his shift when he collapsed in the operating room locker room. Frank had gone into sudden cardiac arrest, and his colleagues and friends sprang into action and performed CPR right then and there.

What happened next was a powerful reminder that at Mount Sinai, the commitment to care doesn’t stop with patients. Staff in the Mount Sinai community take care of each other, too.
