DID YOU KNOW?

GET RID OF LICE THE FIRST TIME

If you do detect head lice in your child, it’s important to research all of your options for a safe and effective treatment.

We hear from parents every day who have treated with over the counter lice shampoos multiple times over weeks or months and their child still has lice.

That’s because lice have developed resistance to the chemicals found in the most common over the counter products, which means they are only about 20% effective.

NITPK LICE REMOVAL uses a non-toxic solution (plant enzymes) that suffocates and kills all live bugs and a heated air device that dehydrates and desiccates all nits.

Okay, call us nerds but we LOVE talking about PREVENTION. Share this info with your friends and family.

LICE PREVENTION
The sooner head lice are detected, the better. Quick action and preventive measures can minimize their spread and chance of returning.

Avoid direct head-to-head contact with others. This is the most common way lice is spread.

Don’t share brushes, combs, scarves, hats, pillows or hoodies.

Keep hair in tight buns or braids when around others.
Screen your child for head lice once a week to catch a case early and prevent spreading.

Be extra vigilant after returning from any school, camp, or holiday break (places where outbreaks tend to occur more often).

Take your own pillow and sleeping bags to sleepovers.
If you find head lice notify your school, friends, and family immediately to help curtail spread.

Have you ever wondered HOW to clean your home after a head lice infestation?

We thought you might appreciate this list. Let us know if you have any questions.

Once treatment begins, the next important step is home cleanup. Remember that lice live on the head, not in the home, so there is no need to have your house deep cleaned. Lice can only live off the human head for 24-48 hours. Chemical sprays do not affect lice and can be harmful.

LAUNDRY
Clothing and linens do not need to be washed. Putting the following items in a dryer for 45 minutes on high heat will kill the live bugs.

Special stuffed animals, blankets or other cloth items they sleep with
Bed linens, pillows, comforters, blankets, pillow shams
Backpacks, jackets, scarves
Any clothes worn or towels used in the last 48 hours
Anything that cannot withstand the hot dryer cycle or be vacuumed needs to be bagged for 48 hours.

VACUUM
Vacuum common areas where there has been contact within 48 hours of lice detection:

Carpet, rugs, cloth sofas and chairs (use damp cloth for leather)
Cloth car seats and safety seats (or use a lint roller)
Any large pillows that can’t go in the dryer
Lice have claws, not sticky feet. They crawl but cannot travel long distances and cannot move at all on hard surfaces.

FREEZE
Hot water will not kill lice so there is no need to boil or wash anything in soapy water. Instead, it’s best to freeze items. Place items in a baggie and then in the freezer and keep it there for 2 days.

Hair brushes, hair ties, scrunchies
Helmets and hats
Lice infestations only occur on the head, not in the home, so there is no need to have your house deep cleaned by a cleaning service or yourself. Do not use a pesticide spray in the house or on furniture. Lice are resistant to toxins and the use of pesticides can have harmful side effects.

WHY DOES YOUR HEAD ITCH?

Most people think that an itchy head is simply due to lice running around your head causing irritation to your scalp. Not true! As the bug feeds, it secretes saliva which prevents the blood in your scalp from clotting. This way, the bug has an easier time feeding. As the saliva builds up, the scalp begins itching. BUT, this begins to happen after 10 to 14 days. By this time, the lice infestation could be wreaking havoc in your hair!

In addition, studies have shown that 50% of people with head lice don't even itch. How can this be possible?? Because the itching is an allergic reaction to the saliva, and not everyone has the allergy! Who knew??

So how will the non-allergic 50% know they have lice??? Well, the obvious answer is that you can see the nits and live bugs in your hair. HOWEVER, we have seen countless cases where the person literally has HUNDREDS of nits and bugs, and they had no idea. The best way to prevent this problem is to routinely check your head for lice, especially if you have children in school or daycare. We recommend combing through your hair at least once a week. If you have lice, you will catch it early. Don't wait for the itch!!! In fact, all this lice talk is making my head itch right now! Is yours???

P.S. If you're in need of a Terminator comb, we sell them on our website!!!! Highly recommended. We swear by them. Really, we do!!!

Relax, we've got this!

HEAD LICE SCREENING FOR SCHOOLS, CAMPS & DAYCARES:

Does your school, daycare or camp have unwanted visitors? What is the head lice policy? Do you find that children are still returning with head lice?

Nitpk.com offers a program where our practitioners will professionally check all students or campers. Our discreet and non-disruptive methods will ensure minimal interruption and get the job done quickly and quietly.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A letter is provided for you to send home to parents letting them know of a scheduled day for head lice checks.

Each child is seen by a professionally trained Nitpk Lice Removal Practitioner.

Each child is screened using a fresh lice stick. We check the three hot spots for lice and/or lice eggs. Once cleared, the stick is broken and placed in a garbage receptacle.

If lice or lice eggs are found, a sample of hair with an egg on it or a louse is removed and taped to a Nitpk Head Check Verification form that explains our findings. This form is then confidentially returned to the office at the end of the screening.

Upon finding lice activity on a child our Nitpk Practitioner discretely leaves the screening area to cleanse their hands with an antiseptic gel and then washes their nails with a scrub brush before returning to screen other students.

All Head Check Verification forms are provided to the office. Parents are contacted by the office.

Give us a call at 917-226-7665 or email us for more info.

FACT:

Head lice do not discriminate and they are most commonly found in people with clean hair.

What do I look for when doing a head check?

Mature lice are about the size of a sesame seed. They have six legs and do not have wings. They are usually brownish in colour but this can range from a pale sandy colour to yellowy, grey-brown or dark brown.

Lice eggs are not white. Empty lice eggs may appear to be translucent meaning that they are see-through and this is why they seem to take on the colour of the hair. If you look at a lice egg (not an adult louse) under the microscope, you can actually see if the egg is empty or viable. If viable, it will be brown not translucent or opaque.

Nymphs or baby lice are just miniature versions of adult lice and are very hard to see because they are so small. Nymphs can appear red in color and if you see tiny red dots that seem to move, you could be eye to eye with a baby louse.

What are head lice?

Head lice are small grey or reddish brown bugs (1mm to 4mm).

Lice live on the human head only – not on pets or other parts of the body.

Lice cannot survive off the head for more than 24 to 48 hours without a blood meal.

Lice do not hop, jump or fly.

Lice eggs are tear-drop shaped and glued to one side of the hair shaft on an angle.

Viable eggs are typically brownish/yellow to caramel in color – never white.

Empty egg cases or dead eggs are called, Nits.

Nits are clear, opaque, almost see through.

Female lice lay 3 to 5 eggs per day and live for 30 days.

Lice eggs take 7 to 10 days to hatch and another 7 to 10 days to mature and mate.

An louse egg is called a Nit; a baby louse is called a Nymph.
