Living with severe kyphosis, a spinal deformity that limits his ability to move his neck, Harvey Helfand faced a major roadblock—his condition made it nearly impossible for him to undergo the cataract surgery he urgently needed.

After being turned away by others twice, his hope was fading until he met our ophthalmology team at MEETH.

Dr. Jules Winokur, vice chair of ophthalmology at MEETH, promised Harvey not a guarantee, but a commitment: he’d do everything in his power to make the surgery possible.

From there, Dr. Winokur teamed up with OR nurses Digna Navas and Eileen Curran who devised a logistical plan to safely and effectively position Harvey for surgery.

Not only was the surgery successful, restoring Harvey's vision and allowing him to see clearly for the first time in years, but his gratitude was so profound that he wrote a heartfelt letter to the team. And when they learned he’d be celebrating his 76th birthday alone, they invited him back for a special birthday party with the very team that transformed his life.
