Happy Black Maternal Health Week. This week was founded and is led by Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA) and Black Maternal Health Conference (BMHC).

“Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native (AI/AN) women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women – and this disparity increases with age” -CDC

This year’s theme is “Building for Liberation: Centering Black Mamas, Black Families and Black Systems of Care”, reflects BMMA’s work in centering Black women’s scholarship, maternity care work, and advocacy across the full-spectrum of sexual, maternal, and reproductive health care, services, programs, and initiatives.

Did you know there are actually 2 layers to the membranes that encase baby with the amniotic fluid in utero?
There’s the amnion and the chorion. They seem like they are fused together, but can easily be pulled apart/off each other after birth. There’s a bit of a knack to it but maybe ask your midwife to show you?
But they don’t start off as one …👇🏻

In the very early weeks of pregnancy when the embryo forms and grows, the amniotic membrane also expands until it encloses the entire embryo, except for the umbilical area.
Between the 4th and 8th weeks of gestation, the production of amniotic fluid increases to reach approximately 20 mls. This causes the amnion to swell until it takes over the chorionic space, thus bringing the amnion and chorion in contact with each other. So clever.

From this point onwards the amniotic fluid volume increases from approx 350-450 mls at 20 weeks to 800-1000 mls at 36 to 39 weeks. It is expected to lessen slightly after this point but its not like it runs out and runs dry! Its still getting produced daily 👍🏼

It’s been suggested that adequate Vitamin C in pregnancy may reduce physiologically the risk of preterm/premature rupture of the membranes. Vitamin C is thought to contribute to the integrity and strength of these membranes, which makes a lot of sense given what else Vit C does in the body, when not pregnant!
Remember, Vitamin C is water soluble so we need it daily as we can’t store it well in the body.
Amazing 📷

Hey new parents and parents to be. Knowing your baby's hunger cues is so helpful and can minimize some of the stress of dealing with a new baby. If you can catch their hunger cues before they're screaming and too angry to latch properly, your breastfeeding experience will go much smoother.

Here's what to look for. (Try to catch the cues at numbers 1-3).
1. Smacking and sucking sounds.
2. Sticking out tongue
3. Rooting (looking for that ni**le and turning their head).
4.Fast breathing and squirming.
5. Fussiness. (very hungry now).
6. Frantic movements.
7. Turning Red and crying.

The nurses and pediatricians are telling you that you need to feed your baby every 2-3 hours and your baby needs to gain weight. However, it seems like your little bundle of joy only wants to sleep. Here are some steps to help you get your little one interested in feeding.

1. Undress baby completely and rub their tummies to try to get them to wake.
2. Make sure they have a good latch so that they don't have to work too hard. Working too hard will make them fall asleep.
3. Try breast compressions to help baby feed actively.
4. If your baby doesn't respond express milk either by pump or hand expression and talk to your consultant about the best ways to feed your sleeping baby.
5. Don't give up.
6. Don't panic and meet with a lactation consultant.

Do you feel pain when your baby latches?
Try this.

Bring the baby in deeply to the breast. Its breastfeeding not ni**le feeding. You MUST bring the baby into the breast NOT try to dip down and drop the ni**le into the baby’s mouth.

If the problem persists or you have any questions or concerns about breastfeeding, be sure to find a local lactation consultant. It will save your ni**les and help make your breastfeeding experience enjoyable.

You got this mama!

We love doulas at Stork and Cradle!!!

A doula supports a birthing person during pregnancy, labor, and beyond and is their constant companion. Doulas provide educational support, emotional support, and physical support and they can support you throughout any type of birth.

Remember, however, that doulas do not deliver babies. Yes, you will still need an Obgyn or Midwife.

Did you or will you have a doula?
