"My big sister Jenny who was a D1 college athlete, active, and healthy her whole life had no signs of health issues. When she was 35 years old, a routine checkup with a new doctor resulted in abnormal kidney function, which came as a total shock. How could someone so young and healthy have abnormal kidney function? This is where her battle with chronic kidney disease began.

After many rigorous tests, diet and lifestyle changes, and being closely monitored, at 39 years old, Jen’s kidney function dropped to the threshold where she was placed on the UNOS list to receive a new kidney. Since this process is unknown and could take years, our family spent the next 2 years searching for a living donor, first within our immediate family. I joined Team Kidney Moves to raise funds while training for the 2023 TCS NYC Marathon.

Fast forward to February 10th, 2024 when Jenny received a phone call at midnight from the John’s Hopkins Transplant team. There was a kidney for her. Nearly 17 hours later she was in surgery receiving her new kidney. Our family barely had time to process what was happening.

24 hours post surgery, Jen’s kidney function had improved to levels we could not comprehend. We were relieved, grateful, and in awe of modern medicine. Her kidney function continued to improve and now has reached highs similar to that of someone who was not a transplant recipient! Our family holds a special place in our hearts for Jen’s donor and family. One day this person decided to be an organ donor and this has been life changing for my sister. Kidney (and all organ) donors are angels and life savers. 🧡

The NKF holds a special place in my heart. I want every kidney patient to have a success story just like my sister. This is why I have joined Team Kidney Moves once again to raise funds for kidney patients across the USA, this time for the 2026 NYC Half Marathon. "

Living with CKD means thinking beyond your kidneys, your heart health matters, too. ❤️

People with chronic kidney disease are at a higher risk for heart disease, and managing cholesterol plays a key role in protecting both. During Heart Month, it’s the perfect time to learn how cholesterol and fats affect your body and what steps you can take to lower your risk.

Small changes like knowing your numbers, choosing heart-healthy foods, staying active, and working with your care team can make a big difference for your heart and your kidneys.

“I am reaching out to share a personal mission that is very close to my heart. On March 15, 2026, I will be running the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon to combine my passion for running with raising awareness and funds for the National Kidney Foundation.

This cause is deeply personal to me. I lost my husband and best friend, Edward J. Scott, former Chief of the Mahopac Fire Department, as well as my childhood friend Robbie Shannon, former Chief of the Lake Carmel Fire Department. Both men, dedicated public servants and Putnam County dispatchers, fought bravely against kidney disease, yet their lives were cut far too short.

By running this race, I hope to honor their memory and support the National Kidney Foundation’s vital work in funding research, advocating for patients, and providing life-saving resources for those battling kidney disease.

I kindly ask for your support. Whether you choose to donate, share my story, or cheer me on from afar, your contribution makes a meaningful and lasting difference. Every dollar raised helps the National Kidney Foundation continue its vital work—and every mile I run will be powered by your generosity.

Thank you for standing with me, for honoring the lives and legacies of X-Chief Edward J. Scott and X-Chief Robbie Shannon, and for helping move us closer to a future where kidney disease no longer steals the people we love.”

Erin, thank you for sharing your story, your strength, and your heart with us. 💚

Happy Valentine’s Day 💗

Today we’re celebrating the many ways love shows up in the kidney community — from living donors who give the ultimate gift, to caregivers who stand by their loved ones, to advocates working to raise awareness about kidney disease.

Love is powerful. Love saves lives. And together, we can turn compassion into action by spreading awareness, supporting patients and families, and championing the gift of life.

"My mom gave me life in the winter of 1966. Nearly 30 years later, I was able to give life back to her.
In 1995, she needed a kidney transplant, and I was a match. I was 28 years old, with a two-year-old child at home, and I was about to undergo a seven-hour surgery with no guaranteed outcome. It was scary. It was overwhelming. But the truth is, none of that mattered. The thought of losing my mom was far more frightening than anything else. The idea that Mother’s Day could become something we only remembered, instead of celebrated, was something I couldn’t accept.
My mom was extraordinary. She was fierce, brilliant, and full of energy. A five-foot-three redhead with piercing blue eyes and a smile that could light up any room. She traveled the world, spoke multiple languages, and embraced everything life had to offer. She worked hard, played harder, and found joy in even the smallest moments.
She was so many things to so many people — a mother, a sister, a friend, a business owner, and a confidant. But one of her greatest joys was being Nana to her five grandchildren, her “jewels.” She made each of them feel special, loved, and seen. She had that gift with everyone in her life. If you were in her circle, you were lucky.
Through it all, she carried herself with strength, character, and grace. She never complained. She never asked, “Why me?” She didn’t let her disease define her. Instead, she chose to live fully and love fiercely.
I miss her every single day. Especially in May, when Mother’s Day is everywhere I turn. But my relationship with her didn’t end — it simply changed. I still carry her with me. In my strength. In my resilience. In my gratitude. She gave me a foundation built on love and courage, and that is something I will hold onto forever.
Being able to give her more time — more memories, more laughter, more moments together — will always be one of the greatest honors of my life."

Thank you Randi for sharing your kidney connection story. 🧡
