It’s the perfect time to shift your focus from the holidays to your own personal well-being. 🧡

January is Mental Wellness Month, and mental health plays a critical role in kidney health. People living with chronic kidney disease are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and stress.

These challenges can affect treatment outcomes, quality of life, and overall health. The mind and body are deeply connected. Managing stress, staying connected with others, speaking openly with your care team, and prioritizing emotional support are all important steps in caring for your kidneys and your mental well-being.

"My journey is shaped by my experience with an immune disorder and kidney disease. I want to help others living with similar issues." - Andrew Natera

At 17 years old, Andrew's life changed suddenly when his kidneys started failing due to a rare kidney disease called Dense Deposit Disease (DDD). DDD occurs when part of the immune system, called complement, doesn't work correctly. The complement system is a group of proteins that help fight infections.

Instead of letting his diagnosis hold him back, Andrew used it as motivation. Now in college, he's studying microbiology and immunology with the determination of becoming a doctor in hopes to help others facing the same challenges.

The new year is the perfect time to reflect on our health habits, including how staying active supports kidney health! Regular physical activity can help people living with chronic kidney disease improve energy levels, maintain muscle strength, support heart health, and better manage weight and blood pressure.

Even moderate movement, like walking or stretching, can make a meaningful difference over time.

At the National Kidney Foundation, we encourage finding safe, sustainable ways to stay active that fit your lifestyle and health needs.
