La Nacional is the oldest Spanish cultural center in the USA. Join the community through live event We are Spaniards, lovers of Spanish culture, New Yorkers.

Inside a multi-functional brownstone at the crossroads of Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and the Meatpacking District, and just outside of Brooklyn, visitors discover the oldest cultural center in the city with a passion for Spain. Hosting live events, classes, authentic cuisine, art, music, and more, our not-for-profit organization supports the expression and promotion of a culturally diverse Spain.

The Society is a final remnant of the once-thriving enclave known as “Little Spain” and our members seek to reinvigorate “Pequeña España” for the eclectic audiences we serve today. We take great pride in opening our doors to everyone: Spanish-speakers, hispanophiles, and New Yorkers from every borough. Since our founding in 1868 La Nacional has been the cultural, spiritual and charitable center for Spaniards in New York. Spaniards of all kinds, including tourists, artisans, professionals and many others have benefited from our corner of Spain. It has served as a meeting ground for political dissidents and revolutionaries, avant-garde poets and artists – among them the groundbreaking director Luis Buñuel and the modernist poet Federico García Lorca, who wrote sections of his famous anthology “Poet in New York” during his stay at the Society. In those early years, we provided Spaniards with food, shelter, healthcare and afterlife services, while functioning as a home away from home. While the needs of our members have changed greatly since that time, the Spanish Benevolent Society still remains committed to assisting those who come from Spain to navigate the urban landscape of New York City. New York City is our home and 14th street is our neighborhood. We are committed to its needs and are excited to announce that after several decades of renting out the restaurant space on the ground floor, the Society is designing our own community restaurant and gathering place. Our non-profit will be teaming up with some of the top culinary institutes in Spain – sponsoring the visas of the country’s best young chefs to create in our kitchen. Expected to open summer 2016, come and enjoy all we have to offer!

What a weekend! 🎉 From June 20 to 22, we celebrated 100 years of La Nacional with music, community, and unforgettable moments on 14th Street. 💯

We want to recognize Jorge Navarro and for filling our salon with the soul of flamenco and keeping this tradition alive for over 25 years. 💃🎶 And thank you to for making it possible for the flamenco artists to travel and share their talent with our community.

A special mention to filmmaker .novis , whose documentary Once Upon a Place beautifully captures the spirit of La Nacional. 🎬

We also want to thank our dear friends .pal, our exhibition curator, for turning our salon into an exhibition of historical archive that tells our story; to , for her tireless dedication to make this anniversary unforgettable; and to artist , whose stunning banner design decorates our brownstone’s façade, bringing our 100th anniversary to life. 🎨

We were honored to welcome Kim Sheridan, , who shared the story of her ancestor Serafín Sánchez - one of La Nacional’s founding members. We’re also deeply grateful to .lastra and her husband Rolando, who traveled from Tampa to represent Centro Asturiano.

This weekend was truly unforgettable. We kicked it off with the inaugural festivities on Friday, gathering representatives from across our entire community - from New York to Spain.

Last week we celebrated a long-awaited and historic moment for our society. We had the honor of hosting the premiere of the award-winning film "Once Upon a Place" (2021), which tells the story of our 156-year-old organization. 🎬✨

Following the emotional screening, we held a Q&A with film director Cèlia Novis and Robert Sanfiz, Executive Director of La Nacional. The audience, filled with members of our community, shared their poignant immigration experirnce and how La Nacional was a vital lifeline for them. It was a truly moving reunion - full of memories, laughter, and so many emotions. A beautiful reminder on the power of community to help each other when we most need it.

We are incredibly proud and excited to finally share this film with the public. Stay tuned for more details on upcoming screenings! 💫

La semana pasada celebramos un momento esperado e histórico para nuestra sociedad. Tuvimos el honor de acoger el estreno de la película galardonada Once Upon a Place (2021), que cuenta la historia de nuestra organización de 156 años. 🎬✨

Join us once again for an exciting Euro game on Friday as Spain takes on Germany this Friday! We will be live-streaming the game and opening our doors at 11:45 am for all the soccer fanatics. Plus, enjoy our delicious tapas and special drinks while you cheer for your favorite team. Don’t miss this incredible event in the best soccer atmosphere in town!
Downstairs in the restaurant will be open for anyone who wants to watch the game AND dine (minimum purchase of $25 per person). The game will also be shown in our upstairs area on our big screens for those who want to watch the game with sangria and beer (no food and no minimum purchase. Only cash). Secure your spot as soon as you can!

Join us for a historic day of fun and futbol! Come to La Nacional for an energy-packed day as we celebrate the LGBTQ+ March and La Roja, two communities we proudly support. Needless to say, Pride will be in abundance!

Outdoor tables will be reserved for parade revelers and walk-ins. Downstairs in the restaurant will be open for anyone who wants to watch the game AND dine (minimum food purchase of $25 a person). We will also put the game on our big screens upstairs for fans who want to watch the game with some beers and sangria, (no food and no minimum purchase).

Our Story

We are Spaniards, Spanish-speakers, lovers of Spanish culture, New Yorkers. Inside a multi-functional brownstone at the crossroads of Greenwich Village, Chelsea, and the Meatpacking District, and just outside of Brooklyn, visitors discover the oldest cultural center in the city with a passion for Spain. Hosting live events, classes, authentic cuisine, art, music, and more, our not-for-profit organization supports the expression and promotion of a culturally diverse Spain. The Society is a final remnant of the once-thriving enclave known as “Little Spain” and our members seek to reinvigorate “Pequeña España” for the eclectic audiences we serve today. We take great pride in opening our doors to everyone: Spanish-speakers, hispanophiles, and New Yorkers from every borough. Since our founding in 1868 La Nacional has been the cultural, spiritual and charitable center for Spanish-speakers in New York. Spaniards of all kinds, including tourists, artisans, professionals and many others have benefited from our corner of Spain. It has served as a meeting ground for political dissidents and revolutionaries, avant-garde poets and artists – among them the groundbreaking director Luis Buñuel and the modernist poet Federico García Lorca, who wrote sections of his famous anthology “Poet in New York” during his stay at the Society. In those early years, we provided Spaniards with food, shelter, healthcare and afterlife services, while functioning as a home away from home. While the needs of our members have changed greatly since that time, the Spanish Benevolent Society still remains committed to assisting those who come from Spain and Latin America to navigate the urban landscape of New York City. New York City is our home and 14th street is our neighborhood. We are committed to its needs and are excited to announce that after several decades of renting out the restaurant space on the ground floor, the Society is designing our own community restaurant and gathering place. Our non-profit will be teaming up with some of the top culinary institutes in Spain – sponsoring the visas of the country’s best young chefs to create in our kitchen.
