As we closed our Butterfly House for the season, we found many Giant Swallowtail butterfly chrysalises hiding around the gardens, doors, and benches. 🌳

While most butterflies are unable to survive in cold conditions, these butterflies overwinter in their chrysalises and emerge in late spring/early summer when the weather begins to warm up. When in a chrysalis, they produce their own form of antifreeze to prevent its cells from freezing. That's how they're able to withstand our harsh Wisconsin winters, how cool! 🦋

Many pollinators and insects, like butterflies, are starting to prepare for winter! Keep in mind, that they rely on and may hide in fallen leaves or the dried, hollowed-out stems of this year's plants for cover and insulation. Some may have formed their chrysalis there already! Leave the leaves this fall! If you do rake your leaves, don't discard them, and move them to your garden beds or in the corners of your yard. 🍃

If you find a chrysalis outside, leave it in its natural habitat. If you bring the chrysalis inside, it may emerge too early when there are no plants available to sustain it.
