When I think of what I look for in a doctor, I think it comes down to what my friend calls, "the 3 As: Ability, Affability and Availability "

If you had to put them in order, which is most important to least?

Just asking.

Theme: Suffering and doing one's best to manage it
Last week, sadly, when my doggie was at the groomer, she accidentally cut his skin in a sensitive location. It hurt and has led to a feeling of itch that will not stop. In order to stop him from licking incessantly (that would lead to infection) he has had no choice but to wear this collar around his head. It's very hard to tolerate that especially when you don't know why this is happening to you, I would imagine. And yet, he has exercised unbelievable patience- especially for a puppy. I am happy that I worked on the "Leave It" command with him when he was younger (working on delayed gratification) because that has helped him to face this challenge, without a doubt in my mind. I can't wait for you to get better soon, Kelev!

Solar Eclipse today in the US. If you don't have special eclipse protection glasses, DON'T look at it. The retina (back of the eye) can be permanently damaged leading to a central or near central blind spot (scotoma). After today there will probably be thousands of young, healthy Americans that will have permanent blind spots. Don't be one of them.

So, I was watching an episode of Seinfeld and the show was about gum. Then I realized that I don't really see people chewing gum like I used to many years ago. Did it go out with the 90's? And yet, candy and gum has become so much tastier over the years. Probably due to advances in gum and candy technology ;). So, I did a search. Here's an article from BI from 2014 which showed that sales in gum were down 11% over 4 yrs. That was associated with gum prices going up. The gum chewers of America will not pay up beyond a certain price point for the greater gustatory experience. It is an example of people being happy with "good enough" and not needing "the best". So, why is it that when it comes to dating, "good enough" isn't good enough? It isn't romantic enough. Also, dating isn't just about desire. It is about fear also- fear of commitment. When you're done with the gum, you spit it out. It's not so pleasant to do that with people.
If the throwing away part is a pleasure (a way to assert one's freedom), then it would make sense that regardless of the taste, all gums are equal and therefore it makes no sense to pay more for the fancier gum. If throwing away is the pleasure, maybe that is why we buy bottled water instead of drink tap for free. If throwing away is the pleasure, maybe that's why we are eating more and becoming obese- so we can throw away more wrappers after.

Gum sales are falling, and no one knows why.

We like to think that we are defined by our hopes, dreams and abilities. Actually, we are defined most clearly by our limitations- by our fears. Definition is limitation. If we had no fears we would have no limits.

*Especially these days- technology is closing the gap among relative ability and disability. Fear is so strong that it will truncate the development of ability or obscure it completely.

Parents, teachers- the school system values intelligence. Private schools can cost 30 to 50G a year in NYC. And the goal- who can know the most and can get the most right answers on tests wins the highest grades. This then gets you into the most prestigious universities. BUT the world doesn't reward intelligence. We all have google for that! The world rewards creativity and organizational skills. These are different types of intelligence and are much harder to teach. What we know isn't as important as how we think... and do.
