So, I was watching an episode of Seinfeld and the show was about gum. Then I realized that I don't really see people chewing gum like I used to many years ago. Did it go out with the 90's? And yet, candy and gum has become so much tastier over the years. Probably due to advances in gum and candy technology ;). So, I did a search. Here's an article from BI from 2014 which showed that sales in gum were down 11% over 4 yrs. That was associated with gum prices going up. The gum chewers of America will not pay up beyond a certain price point for the greater gustatory experience. It is an example of people being happy with "good enough" and not needing "the best". So, why is it that when it comes to dating, "good enough" isn't good enough? It isn't romantic enough. Also, dating isn't just about desire. It is about fear also- fear of commitment. When you're done with the gum, you spit it out. It's not so pleasant to do that with people.
If the throwing away part is a pleasure (a way to assert one's freedom), then it would make sense that regardless of the taste, all gums are equal and therefore it makes no sense to pay more for the fancier gum. If throwing away is the pleasure, maybe that is why we buy bottled water instead of drink tap for free. If throwing away is the pleasure, maybe that's why we are eating more and becoming obese- so we can throw away more wrappers after.

Gum sales are falling, and no one knows why.
