I’m Dr. Elena Klimenko, an internist and certified functional medicine physician in New York City and a creator of affordable holistic primary care called Access Membership plan.
We all know that the path to wellness is a unique, so a “one size fits all” approach doesn’t work to achieve optimal health.
As you know, here in the United States we are in the midst of a health care crisis. The conventional medical training teaches us, practitioners to focus on the treatment of symptoms. Fix the symptoms with the medicine. This focus on symptoms, not on the person, along with lack of consensus and communication between doctor and patient often leads to therapeutic failure and chronic illness.
As a result of this FIX A SYMPTOM system, our country faces an alarming increase in prevalence of chronic diseases; Six out of ten Americans today have one or more chronic illnesses, requiring drugs intervention for a lifetime.
High rate of chronic diseases puts burden on the economics of our healthcare system without significant improvement in any tangible outcome -- we are not healthier and we are not living longer compare to other countries. According to a new report from The Milken Institute America spends $1.1 trillion annually on healthcare. This is more than many other countries in the world, yet our longevity continue to decline.
However, the solution does exist. That is what we propose to attack these issues and “nip the problem in the bud”.
Functional Medicine is a new diagnostic and treatment model proven to prevent, manage and reverse some chronic diseases more efficiently.
Functional Medicine focuses beyond treating the symptoms with a drug, but only through attentive listening and understanding the factors in your life contributing to the disease progression, as well as identifying factors detracting from your ability to heal. The other words, Functional Medicine looks into “ the root cause or causes” that lead to your sickness. Functional medicine’s goal is patients’ well-being. True partnership between patient and practitioner creates therapeutic relationship that helps for patients to feel heard and understood. And that is the beginning of healing not only on the physical level but much deeper.
