If you live in the northeast and have aspirations to run a local marathon, chances are there is one scheduled sometime in the fall.

For those thinking of running a marathon for the first time, this post highlights just a few things to consider before starting your training plan. It's important to create a strong foundation at the start because, in the next 16-18 weeks, your sleep schedule, diet, and weekend plans will revolve around your training!

If you turn on ESPN, you are most likely guaranteed to hear a story about XYZ sustaining an injury during the game. But some may wonder if that particular athlete did "bulletproof" exercises, would they not have been in that particular situation?

So the million/billion dollar question is...is there such a thing as "Injury Prevention Exercises"?

In my opinion, the answer is: No..BUT you can DECREASE the chances of injury if you simply (and understand) this formula:

Injury = Physical Demand > Physical Capacity

Translation: If your physical strength, skill and capability does not meet the physical challenges that you face, then your chances of injury increase.

Real life example: Running a marathon at a competitive pace after 6 months of sedentary lifestyle. Your chances of sustaining an injury during the run dramatically increased compared to those who follow months/years of a training plan.

Things to consider: this is just physical capabilities. Sometimes mental challenges can also lead to injuries as well, but that's a topic that I honestly am not in a position to comment on because I don't have enough clinical experience on that topic

In order to serve my patients better, I am now only seeing patients every other Saturday

But wait! Weren't you open every Saturday?? How is this going to serve us better?

The short answer: Mental/Physical Health

Long answer: I opened my own solo practice late 2019. I had lots of support from my friends and family and had a great start.

But the pandemic was just around the corner. After closing my office and then reopening in July 2020, I had lost the momentum that I had in the beginning.

However, I was determined to never quit and continued to provide the same quality treatments to the best of my ability and offer the best patient-doctor relationship that's rarely seen in the industry.

I worked 6 days a week and offered to come early or stay later to accommodate patients who couldn't make my 8am - 8pm office hours. I answered phone calls, text messages and emails around the clock because I want my patients to feel that I always had their back (pun intended).

Because of this, I am able to grow steadily since reopening. I am now meeting my overhead and able to save a bit for bigger projects that I have for the practice in the future.

But...honestly it's been taking a toll on me both mentally and physically so I am going to take a tiny step back and give myself some more time to recover and enjoy myself as well as train more seriously in some races. I see lots of hiking trips in the future with me and my dog, Burkley 🐕

A special thanks to everyone who's been there to support me!

TLDR: Worked too many hours, going to dial it down before I go crazy.

Wolff's Law

Fun fact: your bones are constantly remodeling even after puberty.

There are special bone cells called "osteoclasts" which absorb old or damaged bone tissue to make way for other special cells.

The other special cell is called Osteoblasts - which deposits new bone tissue where the osteoclasts had reabsorbed.

This great phenomenon was discovered by a German surgeon named Julius Wolff.

If your task/job requires you to lift heavy objects over and over again, your bones will adapt and strengthen over time to help support this task!

The reverse is true...if you're sedentary and don't place enough demand, your bones will weaken over time!

Next time someone says "heavy lifting" is bad for my bones...first make sure they don't have any bone-related disease...and if they don't, tell them about Wolff's Law!

🔹Scoliosis🔹

Oftentimes, those with mild to moderate structural scoliosis can live a happy healthy life without limitations.

Yes, pain can sometimes come and go for some but literature shows that exercise can help decrease any pain associated with it.

However, no evidence has been shown that exercise alone decreases the curve (unless maybe if you have a functional/non-structural scoliosis)

The key goals for those with scoliosis are
1) Improve mobility of your joints
2) Strength and Load your spine with weights
3) Carry on with your life without fear of limitations!

🔹Deadlifts = Best Exercise Ever🔹

▪️Deadlifts are one of the best exercises to improve your strength, muscle mass and athleticism. It is a full-body movement that uses your entire body to perform.

- Improves neurological strength adaptations

- Stronger back means reduced chances of lower back pain

- Bone density increases as you increase your body's capacity to lift heavier weights (Wolf's Law)

- By keeping your shoulders, spine and hips in proper alignment, it trains your body in bettering your overall posture.

- Deadlifts emphasizes large muscle groups in your legs (glutes, quads and hamstrings)

- In order to maintain stability, you'll need to engage and brace your core which means, you'll get stronger with every rep

- Athleticism improves with 40 yd dash, T-test, Vertical Jump and and rotational torque movements

- Improves cardiovascular endurance by increases # of reps/sets and decreasing rests in between

- As the weights get heavier, you'll also quickly develop better grip strength

TLDR: Running doesn't give you knee pain. Improper biomechanics does.

Long-distance running among healthy older individuals was not associated with accelerated radiographic OA. These data raise the possibility that severe OA may not be more common among runners.
