Dr. Larisa Likver is a board-certified physiatrist who has over 20 years of medical experience, specifically pain management, both in New York City and internationally. She has been trained in Prolotherapy by the Hackett-Hemwall Foundation, the leading institution for Prolotherapy education and research, named after the two pioneers who invented and developed this technique in the United States. For over 35 years, the Hackett-Hemwall foundation has hosted a medical missionary trip to Honduras. Dr. Larisa Likver has advanced her expertise in Prolotherapy by participating in this missions in 2014 and 2015, dedicating her time and service to treat people who are otherwise unable to afford medical care. This treatment was created by the New Zealand physician Dr. John Lyftgoft. Dr. Likver attended some of the few global conferences in Neural Prolotherapy to obtain training from Dr. Lyftogt himself. In 2013, Dr. Likver participated in the most comprehensive global conference for Neural Prolotherapy held in Guadelajara, Mexico. Dr. Likver is recognized as a Pioneer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Certification in Musculoskeletal Sonography was first introduced to medical professionals in 2012. Dr. Likver successfully passed this new exam and was among the first to be awarded a Pioneer Certificate. She has nearly 10 years of experience using ultrasound guidance to dramatically improve the outcome of pain-alleviating procedures (Platelets-Rich Plasma or PRP treatment, Prolotherapy, joint visco-supplementation, etc.) through direct and targeted injections. By visualizing the pain-affected area in real-time, Dr. Likver delivers medication precisely where it needs to go.

People tend to spend more time sitting indoors during the winter months. Prolonged sitting increases tension along the neck, shoulders, hips, and lower back. This affects the balance of muscles and creates fascial restrictions that can irritate nerves and strain ligaments.

Improving posture requires both awareness and intervention. Frequent movement breaks, ergonomic adjustments, and treatment for fascial or ligamentous tension can prevent winter posture habits from turning into chronic pain patterns. Addressing these issues early in the year produces better long-term outcomes.

Fascial tissue requires adequate hydration to remain elastic and able to glide smoothly. Winter air and indoor heating both lead to dehydration, although most people notice less thirst during cold months. When fascia becomes dehydrated, it tightens and restricts movement.

Maintaining steady water intake and incorporating electrolyte-rich fluids (like IQMix: https://www.eatiqbar.com/collections/iqmix/products/passion-fruit-40-sticks) helps the fascial system stay flexible. Consistent hydration is particularly important for patients undergoing treatments such as hydrodissection or prolotherapy, since hydrated tissue responds better and heals more efficiently.

During winter, people tend to move less, and blood vessels naturally constrict in response to cold. This reduces circulation and slows the body’s repair processes. Ozone therapy improves oxygen delivery, modulates oxidative stress, and enhances circulation at the microvascular level.

These effects are especially valuable in winter, when inflammation tends to linger and tissues recover more slowly. Patients receiving ozone often report improved clarity, better energy, and reduced tension due to increased cellular efficiency and reduced inflammatory load.

January often brings ambitious exercise goals or sudden increases in activity. However, the body needs time to adjust to changes in demand. Early signs such as stiffness, reduced range of motion, or localized fatigue are signals that tissue needs support.

Listening to these signals and addressing them early helps prevent chronic pain and reduces the likelihood of more significant injury. Evaluation, targeted treatments, and gradual conditioning are more effective and sustainable than forcing the body into intense routines without preparation, and Dr. Likver can help. Cold temperatures cause muscles and fascia to contract. This increases pressure around nerves that already have limited space. As a result, patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar neuropathy, or sciatic irritation often notice more numbness, tingling, or burning symptoms during winter.

Ultrasound-guided nerve hydrodissection is a precise treatment that restores space around the nerve by separating tight or adhered tissue layers. This improves blood flow, reduces friction, and allows the nerve to function more normally. When combined with warming techniques and gentle mobility, hydrodissection provides significant relief during the colder months.

Regenerative medicine works by repairing and strengthening damaged tissue rather than masking symptoms. Prolotherapy, PRP, and ozone therapy activate different aspects of the body’s natural repair system. Some stimulate collagen production, others improve oxygen delivery, and all support healthier tissue structure.

As the new year begins, many patients commit to improving their long-term health. Regenerative therapies align with this mindset because they improve stability, mobility, and function at the tissue level instead of offering temporary symptom reduction. This is a beneficial time for patients to shift their focus toward deeper and more lasting healing.

Morning stiffness tends to increase in cold weather because circulation slows during sleep and synovial fluid thickens at lower temperatures. A short mobility routine can significantly improve comfort throughout the day.

Start with diaphragmatic breathing to reduce muscle guarding. Next, add small-range joint movements such as ankle circles, head and neck rotations, and shoulder rolls. Finish with light fascial stretching to warm connective tissue and restore glide. This gentle progression helps loosen joints, improve coordination, and create a smoother start to winter mornings.

Skiing, skating, and other winter activities place significant stress on the ligaments that stabilize joints. Sudden direction changes and uneven surfaces often challenge the strength and elasticity of connective tissue. If the ligament has been overstretched or weakened, the joint becomes less stable. This increases the risk of strain, repetitive irritation, and lingering pain.

Prolotherapy is designed to strengthen these tissues by stimulating self-repairing mechanisms. Unlike cortisone, which suppresses healing, prolotherapy encourages the body to rebuild supportive structures. Patients who are active during winter or recovering from early season injuries often see improvements in stability, balance, and performance when prolotherapy is used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Many patients experience increased joint pain and stiffness as temperatures fall. This occurs because colder air affects circulation, muscle tone, and the pressure inside joint capsules. When barometric pressure decreases, joint tissue can expand slightly, which increases discomfort in areas that are already irritated. Cold weather also reduces blood flow, which slows the warmup of muscles and fascia, and this makes movements feel more restricted.

Managing winter joint pain requires proactive support. Layering clothing, using heat, and maintaining daily movement all help keep tissues supple. For those who continue to struggle, ultrasound-guided regenerative treatments such as prolotherapy, PRP-prolo, or prolozone injections can address instability or inflammation and improve comfort throughout the colder months.

December often brings higher emotional and mental demands. When the nervous system becomes overloaded, the body enters a more vigilant state. This increases muscle tension, decreases fascial mobility, and raises pain sensitivity. Stress alone can cause existing injuries to feel worse, even when there has been no obvious mechanical change.

Effective pain care during the holidays requires attention to both the tissue level and the nervous system. Treatments such as vagus nerve hydrodissection, neural therapy, and ultrasound-guided fascial hydrodissection help regulate the stress response and make the body more receptive to physical healing. This approach helps reduce symptoms that appear to worsen suddenly during busy or emotionally challenging weeks.

This season reminds us that gratitude is more than an emotion; it is a biological process with measurable effects on healing. Research shows that practicing gratitude reduces sympathetic nervous system activity (fight-or-flight), lowers inflammatory markers, and improves sleep—all crucial for tissue repair and pain recovery.

At Dr. Larisa Likver’s practice, we honor both the physical and emotional aspects of chronic pain. This Thanksgiving, we invite you to reflect on the progress you’ve made and the strength it takes to continue your healing journey. Your body notices the effort, and every step matters.

Chronic stress elevates cortisol and inflammation, disrupts sleep, and sensitizes the nervous system, all of which contribute largely to persistent pain. Over time, this feedback loop can keep the body in “fight or flight mode,” leading to trigger points, fascial tightening, and amplified discomfort.

Dr. Likver takes an integrative approach to break this cycle: restoring nervous system regulation, reducing inflammatory load, and improving tissue mobility through evidence-based, regenerative therapies. When the body no longer perceives a threat, healing becomes possible.
