Happy Lunar New Year!
Just to be clear, I’m not all that educated about the full history and meaning of the Lunar New Year, and I’m trying to be better educated about it. However, I think Lunar New Year is a great time to celebrate Asian culture, whether it is celebrating Cantonese, Taiwanese, Korean, Asian American, Philippines, etc. it’s always been easy for me to celebrate the things we have from Asian culture being that typical (half-white) gamer dude growing up playing Zelda, eating sushi, drinking green tea, and waiting for the next Yu-Gi-Oh! Episode growing up.
However,
I haven’t always been the best in acknowledging and celebrating the people behind my consumption. In The United States, there is approximately 19.9 million AAPIs and, sadly, many face hate and discrimination. It’s important we celebrate the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders today and not just there culture. Whether that’s by being purposefully maintaining friendships with AAPIs consistently, listening to their struggles, staying informed on the struggles AAPIs face and pursuing change, or standing up to injustice.
I am celebrating by learning and cooking more culinary stuff like Steamed fish, vegetable rolls, and doing hot pot tonight. But I wanted to share Asian American Christian Collaboration’s STATEMENT ON ANTI-ASIAN RACISM IN THE TIME OF COVID-19 (Link in Bio).
Let’s celebrate Lunar New Year by loving the people who have greatly shaped our culture today.
