You hear the dreaded words, “you have cancer” and the world stops. You cannot catch your breath. You are waiting to awaken from the nightmare. This declaration is followed by the seemingly distant drone of a physician’s voice, quoting statistics, chemotherapy, radiation and surgery plans. A vocabulary you never heard before. You immediately feel you have to start googling for information. You leave the office with paperwork, requisitions for lab test ands and a series of imaging appointments. You do not recall how you got home.

Someone who is your advocate, your supporter and your advisor leaving your family members to be there for you as family and assist with other needed tasks like childcare, meals, transportation without the added task of having to synthesize the complexities of cancer care.

Second-guessing yourself when deciding on a physician or treatment option is common. You are in a self-preservation mode and worry that any decision you make may be “wrong”. There is no wrong pathway. If given options, it means that there are pros and cons to each and the doctors have similar faith/concerns about each one.
