At just 4 years old, Noor’s health took a sudden turn. Severe headaches soon gave way to nightly fevers that spiked to 104 degrees leaving her weak and drained.

Her pediatrician referred her to MSK Kids, the pediatric cancer program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), where she was diagnosed with Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer that had already spread beyond her kidney. “I remember feeling frustrated and confused,” Noor recalls. “My stomach was constantly hurting, and I never knew why I couldn’t just play in the park like all of my other friends.”

At MSK Kids, special traditions and programs helped her feel like more than just a patient. “As a child, those were the moments I remember, and I think MSK did a fantastic job allowing me to be more than just a child with cancer.”

Fast forward to today, Noor is cancer free and is starting her freshman year of college studying journalism and business. She is also dedicated to giving back and is involved with Cycle for Survival. Her team, Noor’s Army, has raised over 1.5 million dollars for rare cancer research.

Today, Noor enjoys taking time for herself by reading, running, and going on walks. When asked what she would tell someone who is newly diagnosed, she shares: “Do the things you like to do and allow yourself to enjoy life still. Don’t allow cancer to control your life, force your life and your passions to control your cancer.”

🔬 "What makes MSK extraordinary isn’t just our doctors or our scientists. It’s how we work together," says MSK lymphoma specialist Dr. Santosha Vardhana.

Every day, Dr. Vardhana moves between treating people in the hospital and asking questions in the research lab, where he and his team are working to find better therapies for people with lymphoma.

"When I see a patient struggling, that directly shapes what I investigate next." That direct connection has been instrumental in MSK’s ability to develop most of today’s FDA-approved lymphoma drugs that have improved patient outcomes.

Cancer research means bigger breakthroughs, on a faster timeline, that improve the lives of people impacted by cancer.

When Basil Keepp joined MSK in July 2024 as a Clinical Nurse Coordinator in the adult bone marrow transplant service, he never expected to one day donate bone marrow himself.

In 2019, Basil signed up to be a donor for NMDP. "I learned that my ethnic origin (Indian) was one of the least represented on the bone marrow registry, so I reached out to NMDP on their website to request a swab kit,” remembers Basil.

In early 2025, Basil received an email from NMDP letting him know he could be a match for a one-year-old girl with Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID). Months later, he got the call: he was a match.

Before he knew it, Basil was on his way to Washington, D.C. for the donation. "I was out of the hospital that same day and back to work at MSK two days later. I would do it again in a heartbeat," he shares.

In his role, Basil coordinates bone marrow transplant care for adult patients at MSK. He arranges diagnostic testing and appointments prior to a transplant, educates patients about what each day looks like post-transplant, and instructs patients about their post-transplant stay in the hospital.

For Basil, donating bone marrow felt like a calling, something that he knew he had to do, especially given his line of work: “When I got the call, it felt so serendipitous, like I was completing the circle."

With every hug Michelle gives her 10-year-old daughter Peyton, she’s filled with endless gratitude for MSK orthopedic surgeon Dr. Edward Athanasian for allowing her the ability to squeeze Peyton tight.

In August 2020, Michelle was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma after finding a lump on her forearm. Living on Long Island, Michelle found convenient care at MSK Commack, which was also close to her parents home and was helpful as a single parent with cancer.

She immediately started chemotherapy, and in November 2020, had the tumor in her arm removed. “Dr. Athanasian was not only able to remove the tumor, but he also saved my hand and arm and secured full range of motion in my hand.”

Her care team also included sarcoma medical oncologist Dr. Viswatej Avutu and Sabrina, a nurse she had throughout her entire treatment and someone Michelle found to be a close friend.

Michelle recalls the hard days of parenting alongside treatment: “It’s hard being a mom and trying to explain to your 5-year-old that mommy is going to be sick. But she was the most amazing little girl the entire time," says Michelle. “One day she even encouraged me not to wear a wig when my hair started to grow back in. And that was the first time I didn’t wear my wig in public.”

Today, Michelle, 35, sees her care team every six months and just got married in August. As a big diving enthusiast, she is looking forward to her honeymoon in Aruba.

“If it wasn’t for MSK, I wouldn’t be doing all of these things.”

Give a 🙌 for Michelle!

Judy traveled to MSK from Mississippi to be treated for late-stage urothelial carcinoma of the kidney, a rare form of kidney cancer and a close cousin of bladder cancer.

Her care team at MSK included urologic surgeon Dr. Ari Hakimi and genitourinary medical oncologist Dr. David Aggen and her treatment featured a new approach that included an antibody-drug conjugate. A few months later, scans showed no signs of disease.

Today, Judy is back home beekeeping, baking goodies, and spending time with family and friends. 🐝

When Emily's 4-year-old son, James, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, pediatric cancer advocates encouraged her to travel from Washington, D.C. so that James could be treated at MSK.

He underwent two 12-hour surgeries to remove the primary tumor and all other soft tissue disease, as well as chemotherapy and a new neuroblastoma immunotherapy treatment using an antibody drug.

Even though the drug appeared to have erased the cancer, his care team wanted to do everything possible to prevent the high-risk neuroblastoma from returning and recommended a cancer vaccine that would train his immune system to continuously be on guard to spot and fight malignant cells.

The therapies worked, and now James is receiving a vaccine to reduce the risk of his disease returning.

"A lot of people have said to me that it's a miracle James is OK now," his mother, Emily, says. "I would say the miracle is that there are people like Dr. Modak, Dr. Cheung, Dr. Gerstle, Dr. Kushner, and others who have made this their life's work."

The family also participates in Cycle for Survival team for “Team SuperheroJames," which has raised more than $600,000 since 2021 to support continued research.

“My survival was not a coincidence. It was a calling.”

Long before September 11, 2001, MSK clinical nurse Jocelyn Brooks had been shaped by her mother’s example. From a young age, her mother instilled in her a spirit of care and service to others. That foundation would carry Jocelyn through some of the darkest and most defining moments of her life.

On 9/11, while working as a vice president in finance, Jocelyn escaped the 40th floor of 1 World Trade Center. The smoke, chaos, and fear of that day left an indelible mark. In the years that followed, she felt called to return to the purpose her mother had nurtured in her. Jocelyn went back to school, earned her nursing degree, and began a career that she now knows was her true calling.

Today, Jocelyn is a clinical nurse at MSK, where she cares for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. She provides not only advanced medical care but also compassion and strength to her patients. "I care for them, hold their hands, listen to their stories, and offer support in what is often the most difficult time in their lives," Jocelyn says.

Jocelyn’s story is one of purpose, service, and healing. Every interaction with her patients carries forward the lessons of both her mother’s influence and her own journey.

“It’s impossible for me to separate my nursing journey from my experience on September 11, 2001. Every time I stand beside a patient, I am reminded of why I survived that day...I know now that my purpose is to serve, to heal, and to offer hope.”
