Roots & Rivers Kids: A Wellness & Arts Program

Roots & Rivers Kids: A Wellness & Arts Program A comprehensive movement arts program for children ages 3 - 12 based out of Sweet Water Dance & Yoga, conveniently located one block from Yankee Stadium.

Roots & Rivers Kids is a wellness and arts program dedicated to addressing issues highlighted by the recent campaigns, by creating a culture of wellness and empowerment for Bronx Kids & their families. Four concentration areas come together to provide a powerful experience of what health & wellness can look like in the Bronx for Bronx families. COMMUNITY & ENVIRONMENT: Encouraging health and wellness in our littlest citizens means encouraging environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility over our environment. Roots & Rivers explores our local ecology, and issues affecting our environment. Participants explore the Bronx and Harlem Rivers, research issues of recycling, urban farming & composting, and implement solutions in their communities with measurable results. MINDFUL MOVEMENT: In creating a culture of wellness in the South Bronx particularly, the old prescription of diet and exercise are not enough. What is most missing is MINDFULNESS. In this concentration, Roots & Rivers Kids will explore an introduction to Mindfulness through movement. We will encourage a habit of mindfulness for our kids with daily reflection, age appropriate yoga classes, as well as various dance forms such as hip hop, salsa and capoeira (an afro-brazilian dance form that bring together fitness, fairness, self control, play and culture). FINE ARTS: A focus on the arts encourages self reflection and a more engaging relationship to our environment. This year, Roots & Rivers Kids will explore the fine arts through a study of Poetry & Theater. The poetry component will culminate in a performance and a self published chapbook of poetry by the group. Theater will be examined through a visit to a theatrical production and in application as the group prepares, performs and produces a complete theatrical production. APPLIES SKILLS: Experiences are best integrated when we are able to apply what we’ve learned in the physical world. Roots & Rivers Kids will have the opportunity to bring concepts into reality with our Applied Skills concentration. Through all other components, they will learn skills that will help them develop confidence in their ability to produce: to take an idea and create or present something real. All of these components are designed to provide our Kids with core self-care and mindfulness skills, as well as the confidence to move and engage their environment in a meaningful and inquisitive way.

The practice of meditation in schools deserves serious attention from parents and policymakers. An impressive array of studies shows that integrating meditation into a school’s daily routine can markedly improve the lives of students.

It was Gibran's 8th birthday. Music was playing, the kids started dancing, and suddenly I recognized the rapt look on their sweaty little faces...THEY ARE RAVING! They were lost in the music, feeling the beat, enjoying their bodies to the max. That's where the idea was born. So because , we are super excited to bring you the Roots & River's Get Down: A monthly party complete with Live DJ, colorful lights and strobe lights where kids get down to their favorite dance tunes. They will dance, they will sing, they we definitely sweat. Stay tuned for dates, times, and details.

Yes it does.

In addition to dance, drum, Bronx culture & nature and weekly trips, Roots & Rivers Stewards* get a 5 week training in effective and sustainable mindfulness practices that start with yoga, deepen with age appropriate meditation and now include Phonemic Intelligence Training.

Phonemic Intelligence (or PI) uses spoken phonemes combined with hand gestures to balance the various hemispheres of the brain and results in improved learning, behavior and quality of life.

“PI practitioners of all ages have reported to us a significant and often dramatic improvement in academics, professional performance, enthusiasm for learning and harmonious behavior. A major impact of PI is in the social and behavioral domain of awakening love, empathy, and compassion among practitioners.

Besides a feeling of self-fulfillment from their practice, PI participants have reported greater social responsibility toward their family members and increased community involvement.”

All these modalities come together to deliver empowering tools that your child can pull from and return to for life.

Our PI trainer will be none other than Partner in Healing, Ayurvedic Practitioner, Therapist and Ayurdoula, .parmar.ayurveda . Shweta brings her passion for healing practices that are effective, sustainable and foster independence to the SWDY community and we are thrilled to have her bringing this impactful training to our Roots & Rivers Kids.

For more information on PI, please visit the Phonemic Intelligence Organization at http://www.phonemicintelligence.org/.

Meet Ibeliz! An artist and yogi, among other things, Ibeliz will be guiding our Roots & River Kids in daily yoga practice, meditation and art! Ibeliz will also prepare the kids for curating their end of program art show & recital!

Ibeliz Guadalupe, born in St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands, is a Yoga Alliance recognized yogi, artist and designer. Having started practicing yoga in 2008 while living in New York City, yoga became a pathway for her to pause, reset and breath in the midst of city life. In 2015 she listened to her inner voice and affirmed her love for yoga by becoming a certified yoga teacher. She holds a RYT-200 and is also certified in Restorative Yoga, Children’s Yoga, Meditation and Reiki. She continues to deepen her practice daily as a means of peeling back the layers of self to awaken truth.
Her purpose in life is to create beauty in the world as she shines light through creating art and yoga. She believes that it is important to guide the little ones to also discover their truth today so that we may have a better future. She believes that yoga and art are useful treasures in supporting the development of confidence, self-esteem, wellness, self care and love for one’s self-both inside and out. In these ways, our youth can shine in their greatness and realize that happiness comes from within.

This years Roots & Rivers Kids are getting BOMBA!

As part of our Wellness & Arts programming, Roots & Rivers Kids practice yoga daily, and get an introduction to a form of movement that is culturally relevant.

This year, we are THRILLED to announce that Roots & River’s Kids will be learning Puerto Rican Bomba with Yelimara & The Legendary Mic!

Yelimara Concepción Santos born in Santurce, Puerto Rico; is an Afro- Puerto Rican woman, educator, dancer, singer, songwriter, Dance Therapist and founder of the Afro - Inspira project. This led her to develop the concept of Afro-Inspira, which attempts to recreate and share the tradition of Puerto Rican bomba in the here and now. Her intention is to promote art as a tool for healing, political, social, and cultural transformation. Yelimara has acquired great experience working with infants, children, adolescents, adults and seniors with severe mental disorders, emotional and behavioral problems in various locations including: community centers, schools, hospitals and self-help programs. In her work, Yelimara emphasizes and faithfully believes that the creative process through the arts can have profound effects on the health, social welfare, psychological, physical, cognitive, cultural and spiritual life of the individuals and communities, creating lasting positive change.

Michael A.Pacheco, better known as "The Legendary Mic", is an educator, emcee, producer and percussionist. Mic has been teaching the youth for 13 years in a variety of settings such as: youth detention facilities, schools and universities.
