This years Roots & Rivers Kids are getting BOMBA!
As part of our Wellness & Arts programming, Roots & Rivers Kids practice yoga daily, and get an introduction to a form of movement that is culturally relevant.
This year, we are THRILLED to announce that Roots & River’s Kids will be learning Puerto Rican Bomba with Yelimara & The Legendary Mic!
Yelimara Concepción Santos born in Santurce, Puerto Rico; is an Afro- Puerto Rican woman, educator, dancer, singer, songwriter, Dance Therapist and founder of the Afro - Inspira project. In her search for creative expressive techniques that explore self and collective identities, Yelimara has trained in theater, music and visual arts . This led her to develop the concept of Afro-Inspira, which attempts to recreate and share the tradition of Puerto Rican bomba in the here and now. Her intention is to promote art as a tool for healing, political, social, and cultural transformation. Yelimara has acquired great experience working with infants, children, adolescents, adults and seniors with severe mental disorders, emotional and behavioral problems in various locations including: community centers, schools, hospitals and self-help programs. In her work, Yelimara emphasizes and faithfully believes that the creative process through the arts can have profound effects on the health, social welfare, psychological, physical, cognitive, cultural and spiritual life of the individuals and communities, creating lasting positive change.
Michael A.Pacheco, better known as "The Legendary Mic", is an educator, emcee, producer and percussionist. Mic has been teaching the youth for 13 years in a variety of settings such as: youth detention facilities, schools and universities.
