Inhale deeply from your diaphragm, while expanding your belly to allow air to sink down, allowing your chest and ribs to expand - ahhh, the Lungs are happy, do you feel it?. When we take in a new breath and expel an old one, there is a sense of revitalization in our entire being.
That is because the Lungs require space, and a deep breath creates that. The Lungs love space and nature. For example, children whose proximity to vegetation close to their homes increased in the first ten years of life tended to have better Lung health (recent research published by the European Lung Foundation).
What does clutter have to do with this? Clutter directly impacts the Lung system, something known in TCM and also now studied in modern medicine. Not only does clutter create more dust, dander, allergens that directly impact Lung function - but on an emotional level, clutter impacts one’s ability to let go. The Lungs take in the new while their partner, the Large Intestine expels waste. Our will to be open and let in the new when one chapter ends and let go to which no longer serves us is not only vital to our emotional stability but our physical bodies. This has to do with physical clutter as well. Many times if the colon is constipated, there can be a level of holding onto something that no longer serves you.
Other than clutter creating cortisol spikes and more stress in our lives, it has been studied that clutter can lead to an inability to focus, overeating, less-restful sleep and feelings of self-criticism.
Support your Lung system, your whole body and declutter, donate things that you no longer wear or need and organize your spaces to make them sacred. Thank your items, cut ties with your energy in those items and thank your new openings!
