SLimDental used to be called Stephen Lim, DDS (founded in 2003) before the name change in 2011. I started my practice so I could practice the ideal standard of care that I learned in dental school. SLimDental was one dental practice with 2 locations in the Rockefeller Center and Murray Hill. We generated alot of buzz through our exceptional patient care delivered with soft hands and soft skills. It wasn’t long before people were asking when will we see their children. Happy to stay in familiar territory I limited our practice to the adult population of Manhattan referring children to a long established childrens’ dentist. I worked and lived in Manhattan myself and sent my own kids to a reputable pediatric dentist. But in 2012 my family escaped the island to take refuge with family friends in Queens during the blackout caused by Superstorm Sandy.
Well it was during that time that my oldest child then 9 years old complained to me that something fell out of his teeth and there was a big whole in one of them. I chalked it up to the stress of the event for a 9 year old boy and perhaps he was grinding his teeth. One by one more and more fillings were popping out so one day we endured the traffic leading into the Midtown Tunnel and opened up SLimDental Rockefeller Center so that Daddy the dentist could fix the problem. As I looked at all the dental work done on my son by my reputable Pediatric Dentist colleague, finding them loose and having to replace them the thought dawned on me: we can do better. As I was filled with confidence seeing my son receive his father’s treatment so gratefully out of want and need, it clicked in my mind and SLimDental Kids was conceived.
I made the announcement to my team in the following weeks and 6 months later we opened York Kids Dental in an already built out and abandoned dental office on 58th and Lex. It wasn’t long before we decided to re-locate to a state of the art facility custom built for us on the Upper East Side at 1400 York Ave. Ironically, after moving to York avenue we changed the name from York Kids Dental to SLimDental Kids out of a desire to give recognition to the connection between our now 3 offices. As I write this story I am sitting in a classroom in UCLA taking continuing education for pediatric dentistry. From tragedy comes blessing. Superstorm Sandy brought in SLimDental Kids to benefit children and families in Manhattan. We are going the extra smile!
