Frequent use of cannabis might lower the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatment for anxiety
A study of adults seeking treatment for anxiety and related disorders in Canada found that individuals who reported using cannabis more frequently had poorer outcomes of cognitive-behavior therapy compared with persons who used cannabis less often or not at all. In spite of this, cognitive-behavior therapy was quite effective at treating anxiety symptoms, even in the group of frequent cannabis users. The study was published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.

Advice | Complaining about your partner? It might be you.
Projective identification captures how people become entangled in each other’s projections. People distance themselves from their unwanted parts, and partners unconsciously internalize and take on the projected qualities as their own.
Our closest partner can become a screen upon which various disavowed, unprocessed experiences — whether aspects of self or of one’s history — can be projected.

ACAP/ICPS Friday Night Series — Working Through: Neuropsychoanalytic Reflections on Prompting Clinical Change
Friday, February 17, 7pm - 8:45pm
On Zoom – 2 CEs
While "aha" moments and dramatic breakthroughs are often a part of good-enough therapy, we all have the experience that real change can take a while. It can take a long while, at times!
There is likely a complex interplay between conscious and unconscious processes: recognizing patterns; understanding historical origins; allowing feelings and ideas into awareness; mentalizing; taking risks within the psychotherapy dyad and outside; identifying with the warm, curious, non-judgmental stance of the therapist; and more.
In this talk, Dr. Zellner will offer neuropsychoanalytically-informed ideas about some processes involved with working through difficult moments, bringing together ideas from affective neuroscience, predictive coding, and more. She will discuss ways to consider cases from a neuropsychoanalytic perspective and how it can impact both the clinician and the course of therapy. You will be able to walk away from this talk with new ideas to immediately apply in your work, and in understanding more about relationships.

Does Forced Therapy Ever Work?
Forced therapy almost always ends in abandonment or failure shortly after its commencement. In other cases, it never even starts as the individual sees it as a form of constraint.

‘We Can’t Look Away’: Documentary ANXIOUS NATION Explores The Rise In Anxiety In Children
The moving documentary, Anxious Nation, delves into the increased rates of anxiety among children and adolescents, and appeals for the urgent need for compassionate and science-based treatment and care.
“We must start treating mental health the same way we treat physical health,” declares producer and NY Times best-selling author, Laura Morton, who is featured in the film along with her daughter, Sevey. “In an ideal world, we would have mental health professionals in every pediatrician's office.”

Essay | The Lifelong Power of Close Relationships
For 85 years (and counting), the Harvard Study of Adult Development, has tracked an original group of 724 men and more than 1,300 of their male and female descendants over three generations, asking thousands of questions and taking hundreds of measurements to find out what really keeps people healthy and happy.
Through all the years of studying these lives, one crucial factor stands out for the consistency and power of its ties to physical health, mental health and longevity. Contrary to what many people might think, it’s not career achievement, or exercise, or a healthy diet. These things matter, but one thing continuously demonstrates its broad and enduring importance: good relationships.

More Schools Are Offering Student Mental Health Days. Here's What You Need to Know
Since 2020, 10 states have passed laws allowing kids to take a day off from school not because they are physically ill, but simply to mentally rest and recharge. Some laws simply state that mental or behavioral issues are now a valid excuse for missing school. Two other states stipulate a limit on the number of designated mental health days students can take, such as Connecticut, which allows students to take two non-consecutive mental health days a year, and Illinois, which allows for up to five mental health days a year. These bills have been sponsored by both Democrats and Republicans.
