We understand parents’ concerns after recent political statements and widespread media coverage suggesting a link between prenatal acetaminophen use and autism. However, high-quality studies have not supported that link. The latest is a Danish study of more than 1.5 million children born between 1997 and 2022, which found no statistically significant association between prenatal prescription acetaminophen exposure and autism in either the general population or sibling-matched analyses.

Sibling-matched analyses compare siblings who differed in prenatal exposure to prescription acetaminophen to control for shared family factors (for example genes, home environment, maternal characteristics). If an association seen in the general population disappears in sibling comparisons, it suggests that shared family factors, rather than the drug itself, may explain the original association.

Similar patterns have been reported in other national studies: a Swedish population-level finding of a small increase in autism risk was not seen in sibling-matched analyses, and a Japanese study found no link in either population or sibling comparisons.

For this week’s Mmunization Monday, we are highlighting RSV and the recent extension to the RSV immunization season. As of April 1, 48 jurisdictions (including New York) are extending their RSV immunization season through April 30 or did not give an end date. The AAP recommends RSV immunization with nirsevimab or clesrovimab for infants under 8 months of age born during or entering their first RSV season if their pregnant parent was not vaccinated during that pregnancy. Infants and children 8 months through 19 months at high risk of severe RSV disease entering their second RSV season should receive nirsevimab. If you have further questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician.

Pediatricians around the country are sounding the alarm that Hib may be the next vaccine-preventable illness to make a comeback. For this week’s Mmunization Monday, we are again highlighting the Hib vaccine in light of CDC reports released at the end of March on declining vaccination rates, as well as increasing reports of Hib cases from pediatricians across the United States. For more information on Hib, please see our post from March 23rd, in which Dr. Larsen explains what Hib is and the importance of the Hib vaccine.

An excellent article from NBC News titled “A deadly bacterial disease is returning, doctors warn, as vaccination rates fall” also provides more information on the state of Hib in the United States.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We are here to provide the most accurate information to keep your children safe and healthy.
