Awash in Orange

There's something adorable and slightly annoying when a child gets hooked on a corny joke.
They squeal with delight with each repetition, as if they were hearing it for the first time anew.
My favorite was a classic knock-knock joke which goes like this:
Knock knock.
Whose there?
Banana.
Knock knock.
Whose there?
Banana.
Knock knock.
Whose there?
Still banana.
Yikes, knock knock.
Whose there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Orange you glad I didn't say banana?

Today you're invited to experience something with simple delight and wonder, as if you were seeing it for the first time.
It just takes a moment to connect with that sense of childlike joy.
And in doing so, you'll feel more hopeful even when your heart is heavy.

I'm sending you strength and love.
Soaringwords is the power to heal.

Reach Out and Touch Someone, Metaphorically

High Quality Connections (HQCs) serve as an anchor, making our lives more meaningful in a tumultuous world. These connections create upward spirals of positivity, where people communicate and receive mutual recognition, respect, and trust. When we prioritize relationships with family, friends, and ourselves—and nurture these connections—we actually rewire our brains for greater positivity. This Valentine's Day, take a few minutes to let yourself and those you love know how much you care. It’s a guaranteed dopamine boost and a lot less expensive than a box of fancy chocolates.

Pop quiz: What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of old age? Hmmm.... it's fascinating when we look at what comes up for us because our thoughts shape our life experience in dramatic ways.

Stereotype Embodiment Theory proposes that negative age beliefs bring about detrimental health effects, misleadingly characterized as inevitable consequences of aging. Common negative tropes include: incompetent, senile, decrepit, slow, and out of touch.

Here's the powerful shocking news: Positive age beliefs add 7.5 years of life - a finding based on groundbreaking scientific research from Professor Becca Levy at Yale University. Soaringwords’ SOARING Into Positive Wellbeing workshops ignite group discussions among residents in long-term care facilities to foster strengths-based recognition, agency, resilience, and social interaction.

Ageism is all around us. During the Superbowl, Ultra Beer showed Catherine O'Hara and Wilem Defoe competing against young athletes in tennis, volleyball, and other extreme sports. The "joke" was that the older team trounced the youngsters. To be sure, this ad was tongue in cheek, while at the same time reinforcing ageist stereotypes.

When you reframe negative limiting beliefs with a more generous, empathetic interpretation it can breathe new life into your life and the life of others, regardless of their chronological age.

Today is National Posttraumatic Growth Day which recognizes and celebrates the profound growth and transformation that happens in the aftermath of trauma. I know this first hand because twenty six years ago today I got a life-altering phone call at four in the morning. The call that everyone dreads. My beloved brother Gary had died suddenly. He was 35 years old. He had an asthma-induced heart attack.

In that moment, I had a decision to make: Would the rest of my life be defined by loss and pain or... would I harness my grief to help others heal. To date, Soaringwords has inspired more than 500,000 people to take active roles in their self-healing in order to experience greater physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

Today we celebrate my mentor and friend Dr. Richard Tedeschi, the pioneering scientist who in 1995 coined the term Posttraumatic Growth which is an evidence-based science that speaks to the ways that struggle can lead to powerful personal change and growth. This growth can be experienced in many ways: increased personal strength, more meaningful relationships, deeper appreciation for life, spiritual and existential change, and a sense of new possibilities. PTG is the foundation of all of our Soaringwords workshops and programs. At the European Conference on Positive Psychology, Dr. Tedeschi, Dr. Pninit Russo-Netzer, and I will be presenting findings from SOARING Into Positive Wellbeing workshop initiative for Israelis in the aftermath of the attacks of October 7. Thank you Dr. Tedeschi and Dr. Lawrence Calhoun for bringing Posttraumatic Growth to the world.
