Are you showing signs of insomnia? If so, it’s time to think about how much caffeine you’re drinking, and when! How many cups of coffee did you have? Or Redbull? Iced teas or heck, even those “all-natural energy drinks”? Caffeine isn’t your friend when it comes to bedtime! Try natural foods that give you energy; and staying hydrated instead! And make sure to have caffeine early in the morning, in small amounts. Comment below if you try this and what your outcome was.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but C.S. Lewis was right! You should not have to TRY to sleep!

Sleep is a natural process that happens to us when the conditions are right. The only thing we should “try” to do, is make sure our brain is getting the correct signals that it is time to sleep, then, let the brain and body do the rest! (see what I did there?) :)

Anyone here a couch sleeper?? 🛋 in the comments if you are!

A little known fact about suffering from insomnia is that sometimes when you have insomnia, it’s easier to fall asleep on a couch (or in a bed in someone else’s home or hotel) vs. your own bed!

There are a handful of reasons for this, but mostly it’s because of the behavioral association that becomes tied to one’s bed after months and years of laying awake and suffering!

Ever just needed a nap to get you through your day? Well, if you won’t say it, I will! I ALWAYS DREAM OF ONE! But here’s a tip! Be sure to rest for just about 20 minutes when napping! Anything beyond that, you’ll wake up tired and groggy. Twenty minutes is the perfect amount for a nap before you fall into a deep sleep!

Also, make sure not to nap too close to bedtime as this can cause your Sleep Drive to be less hungry for sleep once bedtime comes!

As the weekend approaches, I know what you’re thinking, an opportunity to catch up on MORE SLEEP! This is a personal decision that you should work with health experts or sleep specialists when deciding (because there are some instances where catching up on sleep is essential for our health and safety).

In general, a sleep schedule is essential to stick to! When deciding whether to “Sleep In,” you may want to rethink any decisions around changing your sleep schedule just on weekends or holidays since this can lead to something called “Social Jetlag,” which can throw off our circadian clocks and even our heart health!

Studies suggest sticking to that schedule! There’s power in routines!

Do you know the number one thing that American’s sacrifice their sleep for??? The answer is PAID WORK.

The capitalist culture we live in unfortunately rewards this type of toxic priority shifting. For many people, the financial burdens of their lives cause them to have to make decisions between either getting the proper amount of sleep, or working multiple jobs to survive.

Let’s recognize that it’s a privilege to be able to prioritize yourself in a world that often doesn’t allow it. So, if you have the ability, please start to prioritize your health and mental health. And let’s advocate together for safe work environments, and proper wages that help to promote sleep wellness for all individuals!
