“Understanding some of what can be underneath behavior is an important first step. Often we immediately jump to discipline and parenting, without consideration to medical, psychological, or physical issues that can lead to particular behaviors or dysregulation.
Another side to this is how judgemental some people can be when it comes to behavior of children. Instead of thinking of a child’s behavior as a reflection of their parenting, how about we begin to see it as a reflection of their nervous system. There are many hidden reasons why some behaviors may occur that have to do with how their brain and body interpret information. This does not mean that we ignore or excuse behaviors, but it does mean that dealing with the behavior using thinking strategies will not be nearly as effective as addressing the root cause of the issue.
When you shift and begin to see behaviors as regulation, it gives you an immediate way to address the behavior. Work on the regulation needs. This can be done if you understand exactly what is behind the behavior or not. Everyone can use regulation support. Remember regulation is a learned skill, and adults and children alike can benefit from co-regulation strategies.”
