This tissue can contribute to inflammation, pain, and scar tissue in some people. Inflammation can cause pain and a myriad of other issues that we will discuss in further detail throughout the month.

Abdomino phrenic Dyssynergia is a dysfunction of the diaphragm. Your diaphragm is the muscle at the bottom of your rib cage that helps you breathe. In a normally functioning diaphragm and abdomen, the abdominals contract and the diaphragm relaxes during digestion to allow food to digest. With Abdomino phrenic dyssynergia, the abdominal muscles relax and the abdominal muscles contract. This leads to abdominal bloating, constipation, and pain.

If you do have pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, pelvic floor therapy can help. A mixture of hands on techniques to relax the muscles and biofeedback to re-train coordination will help. Your pelvic floor therapist will also review good bowel habits such as regular eating, fiber, eating breakfast, and trying to have a bowel movement at a similar time each day.

To test for dyssynergic defecation, your doctor may use a test called anore**al manometry. In this test, a small balloon at the end of a catheter is inserted into the re**um. A small amount of air is inflated into the balloon. The test will detect pushing force, whether or not the muscles are relaxing properly, and if your re**al sensation is normal.

Dyssynergic defecation is a pelvic floor muscle coordination issue. In this case, the pelvic floor muscles are not working properly when you try to have a bowel movement. The muscles most commonly contract instead of relax. In other cases, there is not enough force from the muscles to push the stool out. This can cause chronic constipation and hard stool, making it even more difficult to pass a bowel movement.

There are 3 different types of IBS. IBS-C which is IBS symptoms with constipation, IBS D, which is IBS symptoms with diarrhea, and IBS-M which is a mix between hard, lumpy stools and diarrhea. Although the exact cause of IBS is not well understood, we do know that symptoms can be impacted by the nervous system and by food. If you have been diagnosed with IBS, it is important to take a holistic approach to treatment. Managing stress, and food triggers can be helpful. Often, IBS can go hand and hand with pelvic floor dysfunction. Resolving pelvic floor muscle dysfunction can also help improve symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a GI disorder with symptoms including abdominal pain, bloating, and change in bowel habits. Although there is no specific test for IBS, your doctor will first rule out any other bowel disorders through a series of tests. People with IBS may be constipated, have diarrhea, or a mix of both. More in the next post about the different types of IBS and symptom management.

Although it is important to learn to contract the pelvic floor muscles on their own, itโ€™s important to remember that pelvic floor strength is impacted by many other muscles including the abdominals, glutes, and low back. Once you can isolate the pelvic floor, you can help facilitate strengthening by practicing activating the pelvic floor during glute, core, and low back strengthening exercises.

We are asked frequently about pelvic floor training devices. There is a time and place for devices that encourage strengthening. You should be assessed by a pelvic floor specialist to determine if a device is right for your symptoms as well as to make sure you are doing a pelvic floor contraction correctly. Often devices wonโ€™t measure if you are correctly contracting these muscles. However, they can be beneficial if used correctly for the right circumstances!
