When someone you care about shares that they’re living with HIV, your response matters. Here are four ways you can show up and be supportive 👇
🧡 Listen with compassion. Let them lead the conversation and share their feelings and experiences without judgment. Your empathy can mean the world.
🧡 Learn about HIV. Learn the facts about HIV – what it is, how it can be transmitted, how it is treated. This will help you to have a deeper understanding of your loved one’s experience.
🧡 Reassure them. Through words or actions, let your friend or loved one know that their HIV status does not change your relationship. Acknowledge their feelings and emphasize that they are not alone and that you’re here for them.
🧡 Avoid stigmatizing language. Create a safe and judgement-free space by being mindful of your words and actions. For example, avoid referring to HIV in negative or dehumanizing ways instead lead with humanity and compassion.
