Last night, our Disaster Action Team on Long Island responded to a fire in West Babylon. Together with Suffolk County FRES, the team opened a temporary reception center at Our Lady of Grace Church to provide a warm space for the displaced residents.

Our volunteers registered 12 households for emergency assistance and provided comfort items including blankets and toiletries.

We are grateful to Our Lady of Grace Church, to Suffolk FRES and to our DAT volunteers for their support of our neighbors in West Babylon.

Any residents affected by this fire who did not connect with the Red Cross responders should call 877-REDCROSS(option 1) to register for assistance.

Dan Lam was just a young man when he was captured while trying to escape Vietnam.

At 22 years old, Dan made the difficult decision to leave everything behind in hopes of a better life in Thailand. While traveling through Cambodia, he was captured by the Khmer Rouge. At the time, this group controlled parts of the country and was known for detaining people attempting to flee the region.

The International Committee of the Red Cross was able to reach the area where Dan and other refugees were being held captive. Gaining the cooperation of the group, they were able to help secure their safe release. In conflicts around the world, these humanitarian workers work tirelessly to uphold basic protections for civilians.

After he was freed, Dan spent a year in a Red Cross refugee camp in Thailand, waiting for a chance to start over in the U.S.

This experience shaped the rest of his life. For the past 17 years, Dan has given back as a Red Cross volunteer, even dedicating time around the holidays last year to help people affected by intense floods in Oregon.
