Understanding alopecia areata starts with awareness.
It’s an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly targets the hair follicles, leading to sudden, patchy hair loss.
The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but factors like:
- Genetics
- Stress
- Other autoimmune conditions may all play a role.
The good news? Alopecia areata can be treated. Treatments are tailored to each patient and may include corticosteroid injections, topical/oral medications, or light therapy - with the goal of calming the immune response and supporting regrowth.
