National Volunteer Month is a good moment to talk about a board service opportunity that doesn't get advertised the way corporate boards do. We are recruiting new board members. By federal design, our board is patient-majority. But there are seats for community members and professionals with expertise in fundraising, grant writing, nonprofit finance, advocacy, workforce development, and health equity. If you've been looking for governance experience that puts your skills directly behind frontline community health, this is one of the more meaningful seats in Brooklyn.Time commitment: one evening per month, plus committee work. During Black Maternal Health Week, we recognize the importance of raising awareness around maternal health disparities and advocating for equitable, compassionate care for all mothers.

Black women in the United States are significantly more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications and maternal mortality, many of which are preventable through timely access to quality care. These disparities reflect deeper gaps in access, communication, and how patient concerns are addressed within the healthcare system.

Awareness is the first step toward change. By highlighting Black maternal health, we can help improve education, strengthen support systems, and advance better outcomes for mothers before, during, and after pregnancy.

At BMS, we are proud to support women through comprehensive Women’s Health and Prenatal Services focused on dignity, safety, and compassionate care.

National Public Health Week is here!

From April 6 to 12, we join communities across the country to recognize the vital role public health plays in keeping our neighborhoods safe, healthy, and thriving. Public health is not just about treating illness. It is about prevention, education, and equity, ensuring that everyone has access to the resources and care they need to live their healthiest lives.

At BMS, we are proud to be part of this mission. Every day, our team works to provide compassionate care, preventive screenings, health education, and community programs that empower individuals and families. Public health is a shared responsibility, and together, we can make a lasting impact.

Let’s use this week not just to reflect—but to take meaningful action and champion a healthier future for our community. Explore available resources, start important conversations, and share what public health means to you.

At BMS, health equity is personal. It is about our neighbors, our families, and our community and the real conditions that shape health in Brownsville and East New York every day. From chronic disease and maternal health to behavioral health, prevention, and access to care, too many people still face barriers that make healthy outcomes harder to achieve. That is why compassionate, community-based, culturally responsive care matters. Throughout this month, we will spotlight some of the health issues affecting our communities and the importance of trusted care, prevention, and connection in building healthier futures together.

Most doctors could work anywhere. Ours chose a FQHC which means they chose patients over profit, access over exclusivity, and community over convenience. That's not just medicine. That's a calling. Happy to the BMS team.

Our patients need your voice today.

The 340B Anti-Discrimination Act (S1913/A6222) is moving through the New York State Senate right now, and Big Pharma is pushing hard to stop it. 340B allows us to stretch limited dollars further, so we can keep prescriptions affordable for the patients who need them most. Without it, the people we serve pay the price.

Contact your elected officials today. Ask them to stand with community health centers and vote YES on S1913/A6222. Find your rep at nysenate.gov.

Take 2 minutes. It matters.
