Dry skin and exfoliation: are they enemies? Not exactly.
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Won’t exfoliating make my dry skin worse?” Almost as often as: “I have oily skin so I skip moisturizer”. But we are going to tackle the second one on another post.
Let’s clear this up with a little skin science.
The skin naturally sheds dead cells in a process called desquamation. When skin is healthy, this happens smoothly and invisibly. But when skin is dry, dehydrated, or the barrier is compromised, those dead cells don’t shed evenly. Instead, they build up on the surface, creating rough texture, dullness, and flakiness.
Here’s the interesting part: that flaky layer can actually block your moisturizers and hydrating ingredients from penetrating effectively. So even if you’re using great products, they may not be doing their job as well as they could. Wasted potential and money right there.
Gentle exfoliation helps remove that buildup, allowing the skin to better absorb hydration and support its natural renewal process. The key here is the word gentle. Over-exfoliating with lotions that contains alcohol denat (simple alcohols), or using harsh scrubs can damage the skin barrier and absolutely make dryness worse.
When done correctly and paired with proper hydration and barrier support, exfoliation can actually help dry skin feel smoother, brighter, and more comfortable.
Think of it this way: Exfoliation clears the path, hydration restores the balance.
Healthy skin is never about skipping necessary steps, it’s about supporting how the skin naturally functions.
Skin care myths are common, but your skin biology is always the best guide.
