EHHOP is staffed each week by approximately 15 Mount Sinai medical students from all class years and two volunteer attending physicians. EHHOP functions as a primary care clinic where students serve as clinical teams, composed of a senior and a junior clinician, clinic manager, lab personnel, patient advocates, and several other positions necessary to maintain a functioning clinic. Students see all patients under the supervision of faculty from the General Internal Medicine Division of the Mount Sinai Hospital Center. Our staff also includes a social worker who provides screenings for insurance eligibility, psychosocial counseling and referrals to other agencies.

Happy Wednesday! This month’s EHHOP Case of the Month is about syphilis testing algorithms. Learn about the two categories of screening test for syphilis: treponemal and non-treponemal tests. Both tests are used in diagnosing patients with syphilis, and the order in which the tests are used are crucial to avoiding high false positive rates.

Happy Monday everyone! Let’s commend students Celestine He, Sheena Kalagara, and all other contributors for their tremendous research on how EHHOP has mitigated the increasing cost of pharmacy medications for the growing EHHOP patient population. EHHOP has been able to successfully increase cost-savings and medications provided by using patient drug assisted programs (PDAPs) and partnerships with pharmaceutical charities. The results of this research is a testament to EHHOP’s dedication to the health of its patients and ingenuity within a constantly changing health care system.
We thank you all for your continued support of EHHOP.

EHHOP is so excited to be back with our case of the month! This month’s case discusses the difficulties in diagnosing and treating a rash. Development of a rash can be due to many factors from having allergy to taking a medication. It is important for physicians to take a through health history of their patient to determine the cause. Click the link in the bio 👆🏽👆🏼to learn about rash diagnosis and the socioeconomic barriers patients experience to treatment.

The EHHOP October Case of the Month highlights the benefits of both doing a home assessment and having patients demonstrate how they take medications. This can be important when working together with patients to improve management of chronic conditions. Our case demonstrates these benefits in a patient using inhalers for asthma and COPD. We hope you enjoy reading and learn something new!

Our Story

EHHOP is an attending-directed, student-run, free clinic at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai that provides uninsured residents of East Harlem with comprehensive, quality medical care. Every Saturday, approximately 35 medical and graduate students join with two attending physicians to run the Main Clinic. EHHOP also runs several ancillary clinics -- Mental Health Clinic, Women’s Health Clinic, and Ophthalmology Clinic -- and offers in-house specialty podiatric and cardiology care.

EHHOP started serving patients in 2004 and is proud to be celebrating our 15-year anniversary in 2019. Over these 15 years, EHHOP has grown from a small primary care clinic to a multidisciplinary endeavor serving more than 300 patients annually at more than 1,000 visits. Volunteerism at EHHOP is more robust than ever, with nearly 180 medical, nursing, and graduate students donating their time annually. In addition to attending physicians, our staff include: social workers, nurses, nutritionists, and lawyers.
