A comprehensive look in Fast Company on discussions around , and why Celmatix is committed to developing therapeutics for ovarian dysfunction.

"One of the biggest lies in healthcare today is that menopause is a natural phenomenon, or a phenomenon that we should feel empowered by somehow, as a rite of passage,” Dr. Piraye Yurttas Beim says. In her eyes, it’s a “public health crisis.”

From hot flashes to thinning hair, startups are tackling menopause's worst symptoms. Others are trying to eliminate it altogether.

While we regularly discuss the complicated health toll of on women, a new study from the Mayo Clinic uncovers a sizable financial toll as well. Findings from the study reveal menopause is estimated to cost the US more than $1.8 billion each year, with 13.4% of women having at least one adverse work outcome due to menopause symptoms and nearly 10.8% reporting missing work in the last 12 months due to menopause. These adverse work outcomes and missed days are even higher for Black and Hispanic working women.

Some are taking sick days. Others are cutting back their hours. Still others end up quitting altogether.

10 years ago a study revealed that females were excluded from most biomedical research. This year, researchers revisited the study to ask; have things improved a decade later?

While the number of studies that included females increased, the proportion that analyzed study results by s*x showed no improvement and in some cases, even decreased.

With that, STAT explains "not only do we miss the opportunity to understand when s*x differences are or are not occurring, we lessen our ability to find effects of the other variables under investigation.”

https://www.statnews.com/2020/06/09/females-are-still-routinely-left-out-of-biomedical-research-and-ignored-in-analyses-of-data/

Compared to 2009, the number of studies that included females grew, but the proportion of studies that analyzed study results by s*x did not.

Celmatix stands in solidarity with the millions of people lifting their voices in protest and also joins countless more in reflecting on what we can do to make this a turning point for racial inequality. Inequality comes in many forms for People of Color, but race-related health disparities are among the starkest and most resistant to progress. Being a Black female further amplifies these inequities. We have to do better.

In this piece, our founder and CEO Dr. Piraye Yurttas Beim reviews these inequities and also presents immediate steps we can take to start addressing them.

PCOS impacts 10 percent of all women and is the most frequent cause of female infertility. However, women still do not have access to drugs developed specifically to treat this condition.

Today, we announced a major advancement that brings us closer to providing unique therapies for the millions of women with PCOS. We have identified a novel drug target to be progressed by our Women's Health Alliance partner Evotec and Bayer as they develop treatments for this under-diagnosed and underserved disease.

Our Founder and CEO Dr. Piraye Beim recently shared her thoughts with Mic on the importance of Rep. Abby Finkenauer's House Endometriosis Caucus. The caucus was created to not only educate the public about endometriosis but also increase the nation's financial investment for this condition that impacts 1 in 10 women.
