🔥 Feeling overheated or sluggish in the summer? TCM has a delicious solution.

As the summer heat rises, Traditional Chinese Medicine encourages us to balance the season with cooling foods and herbs—not just cold in temperature, but energetically cooling to support your digestion and Qi.

🌿 Focus on herbs and foods that naturally clear heat, calm inflammation, and protect against sun-related stress.

One of my favorite ways to cool down without compromising digestion?

✨ A refreshing Chinese herbal tea that nourishes, hydrates, and helps you stay in sync with the season.

Herbal teas like chrysanthemum and wolfberry are considered naturally cooling. This infusion supports hydration and can help your system stay balanced when it’s hot out.

You can re-steep the herbs several times, making it a gentle way to nourish your body all day.

This kind of seasonal eating helps your body adapt to heat while preserving gut health and overall vitality.

Hot flashes are a common side effect of hormone therapy, but Chinese medicine offers a different way to understand them.

When the body’s natural cooling system isn’t strong enough to counter internal heat, symptoms like sudden warmth, night sweats, and irritability can show up. This is often seen as a pattern of too much Yang and not enough Yin.

Acupuncture is used to help calm that internal heat and support the body’s natural cooling mechanisms. Treatment is often combined with other tools that regulate sleep, digestion, and stress—factors that all influence how often and how intensely hot flashes appear.

If you’re noticing patterns in your symptoms, paying attention to what’s happening in the rest of the body may be the missing piece.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, foods are categorized by taste and temperature. This helps determine how they influence your energy, digestion, and internal balance.

Here’s a quick guide:

• Sweet and warm foods help support Qi and strengthen the system
• Bitter and cold foods are traditionally used to clear internal heat
• Aromatic herbs assist digestion, especially during hot, humid months when the digestive system can become sluggish

This approach is part of Chinese food therapy, where food selection is guided by both seasonal needs and individual constitution.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, food is more than just fuel; it plays an active role in supporting your health. Food therapy considers the temperature (cooling, warming, neutral) and flavor (sweet, bitter, pungent, etc.) of each ingredient to help guide the body back into balance.

Summer, a yang season marked by heat and humidity, calls for foods that cool the body, support hydration, and ease digestive strain. Instead of heavy meals or overly cold/raw foods, Chinese medicine encourages light, cooked meals with naturally cooling properties.

Here are some traditional summer favorites highlighted in the blog:
✔️ Green tea – cooling and helps clear heat
✔️ Sour plums – astringent, may help reduce excess sweating
✔️ Tofu – cooling and easy to digest
✔️ Bitter melon – clears heat and supports digestion
✔️ Mung beans – made into cooling soups or drinks
✔️ Daikon radish – used in light soups to aid digestion
✔️ Watermelon – hydrating and traditionally used to help with heat stroke
✔️ Basil – aromatic, supports digestion despite its warm nature
✔️ Mint – aromatic and cooling, good for mild summer colds
✔️ Lotus root – cooling and often added to soups or pickled

When we eat in alignment with the seasons, we help the body stay balanced and resilient through shifting weather and energy patterns.

Morton’s neuroma causes sharp, burning foot pain that can feel like a pebble stuck in your shoe.

In Chinese medicine, we think about the whole person and the underlying imbalance. Pain is a sign of stagnation—energy and blood aren’t flowing the way they should.

Here’s how acupuncture helps:
✅ Increases blood flow to reduce nerve compression and pain
✅ Calms the nervous system to lower inflammation and improve healing
✅ Addresses tension or blockages higher up the chain—like in the hips or knees—that restrict flow to the feet
✅ Supports the whole body to create a better healing environment

We also use tui na (medical massage) to help open space between the foot bones and relieve pressure on the affected nerve. Diode rings may also be used to encourage circulation and reduce irritation in the area.

If foot pain is keeping you from moving comfortably, acupuncture offers a gentle and effective way to get relief without invasive procedures.

Digestive health affects more than comfort. It plays a role in energy, focus, immune function, and how you feel day to day.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, small daily practices can support digestion naturally. These include:

• Applying acupressure at ST36 to stimulate digestion
• Chewing food fully so the stomach has less work to do
• Choosing cooked foods when digestion feels off
• Practicing deep belly breathing to support the nervous system
• Including probiotic-rich foods like kefir to nourish gut bacteria

When it comes to Morton’s neuroma, small daily changes can help take pressure off the nerves in your feet. It often develops from tight shoes, repetitive impact, or structural issues that restrict circulation and irritate the nerve between the toes.

These tips may support recovery and reduce irritation:

✔️ Wide, supportive shoes help reduce pressure on the ball of the foot.
✔️ Skipping high heels can prevent compression that worsens inflammation.
✔️ Gentle movement like walking or stretching may keep tissues mobile.
✔️ Improving circulation in the hips and legs helps ensure nutrients and blood flow reach the feet.
✔️ Tui na massage can relax tight areas around the toes and metatarsals.
✔️ Acupuncture supports the body's natural healing response by promoting circulation, easing nerve tension, and addressing full-body imbalances that can affect healing.

We don’t just focus on the foot—we look at the whole body. When there's stagnation or tightness in the hips or legs, it can restrict blood flow and slow healing in the lower extremities. That’s why treatments often include points beyond just the site of pain.

Every case is different, but conservative options like these are often worth trying before jumping to injections or surgery.

Yin is responsible for keeping the body cool, hydrated, and stable. It anchors the mind, supports restorative sleep, and helps regulate internal heat. As we age, Yin can gradually decline resulting in Yin Deficiency heat.

When Yin becomes deficient, you may have:

• Dry skin, brittle hair, dry eyes
• Restless sleep or night sweats
• Afternoon or evening heat, hot flashes, or flushed cheeks
• Anxiety, irritability, or feeling overstimulated

These symptoms are common but not something you have to live with. We use acupuncture and herbal medicine to replenish Yin and regulate the systems that rely on it. Treatment focuses on boosting the Yin, improving fluids in the body, and strengthening the body’s ability to recover from everyday stress.

Chinese medicine has a long history of anti-aging practices focused on helping your body stay strong, clear, and well-regulated.

These are some of the core practices I use and recommend in clinic:

💆‍♀️ Acupuncture supports Qi and Blood flow, which helps with inflammation, circulation, hormone balance, and stress regulation. Regular treatment can reduce the risk of conditions like osteoarthritis and burnout.

🌿 Herbal medicine is tailored to support your constitution. We use herbs to nourish Qi, Blood, and skin, and to help the body adapt with age.

🧘 Tai Chi and Qi Gong help you stay strong and mobile without depleting energy. They’re gentle on the joints and support circulation.

🌬️ Breathwork and meditation calm the nervous system and preserve Yin. This helps with sleep, mood, and resilience under stress.

✨ Facial Gua Sha increases circulation, releases facial tension, and encourages collagen activity for healthier skin tone and texture.

🍲 Warm tonifying foods such as mushrooms, sweet potato and bone broth that support the production of Qi and Blood.

Small steps like these build the foundation for a longer healthspan—the years of your life spent in good health.

Ask Dr. Alban: Can acupuncture still help if I’m already taking allergy meds?

Yes. Acupuncture works differently than medication. While antihistamines aim to block symptoms, acupuncture supports the deeper systems that affect how your body reacts in the first place.

In Chinese medicine, seasonal allergies are seen as an invasion of Wind—a disruptive force that triggers symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itching. When Wind combines with Heat, it can cause red, itchy eyes or a sore throat. If it combines with Cold, you may notice a clear runny nose, body aches, or chills.

The difference in how people react comes down to the strength of Wei Qi, your body’s defensive energy. When Wei Qi is weak, the body becomes more reactive to external triggers like pollen and mold.

Acupuncture helps by:
• Strengthening Wei Qi (your immune defense)
• Regulating how your body responds to allergens
• Calming inflammation and irritation
• Supporting energy if meds leave you tired or foggy

If you’re taking medication but still experiencing symptoms—or want to reduce your reliance on meds—this approach can help.
